When Laurinda mentioned Beatrice and Larson, Tanya’s eyes lit up. Her smile grew even warmer, and she leaned in, curiosity sparkling in her gaze.
“So, you’re the girl Larson’s always talking about. You have a younger brother, don’t you?”
Laurinda nodded. “Yeah, my brother’s seven. Adolphus took him to the Flame Training Base this morning.”
Felix suddenly remembered his oldest son had called earlier, mentioning Adolphus brought a seven-year-old to the base. He hadn’t realized that kid was his future brother-in-law.
Felix turned to Adolphus. “Isn’t seven a little young for training?”
Adolphus shrugged. “Not really. I was four when I started at Flame, following Locke around. Seven’s just about perfect for Jasper.”
Laurinda couldn’t help but glance at Adolphus, surprised. Four years old? That was even younger than when she’d started at her own camp at five.
Adolphus must have felt her eyes on him. He looked over, their gazes meeting, and he gave her a soft, reassuring smile.
“What’s wrong? Worried about me? Don’t. The Flame Training Base is good for kids. It’s tough, but it’s not cruel. I promise.”
Felix had to fight back a grin. Adolphus was smooth, saying just the right thing to put Laurinda at ease.
While Laurinda and Felix chatted, Tanya took the chance to call out to Renee. “Renee, could you bring out the gift I prepared for Laurinda?”
“Sure thing,” Renee answered, and slipped out of the room. A moment later, she returned, carefully carrying a sandalwood box with intricate gold inlay.
Tanya took the box and waved Laurinda over. “Come here, Laurinda. Take a look at the gift I picked out for you. See if you like it.”
She opened the lid and revealed a jade bracelet, its green so vivid and pure it almost glowed.
