Dorian stared blankly at the lifeless Alistair Hart, then suddenly dropped to his knees and began to wail.

“Dad! Dad!”

Grace remained seated, watching the man who had given her life, only to ruin half of it, become a cold corpse.

Her eyes didn’t even redden.

She just felt tired. A bone-deep exhaustion settled over her, heavy enough to make her very spirit feel leaden.

Damien bent down and swept her up into his arms.

“Let’s go. This place feels like a tomb.”

As they passed Dorian, Damien paused.

“Stop crying. Save your energy.”

“Did you hear what your father said? Indecisive, and a danger to himself and others. Dorian, you’d better watch your step from now on.”

By the time they left the hospital, the sky was completely dark.

Damien had wanted to take Grace back to his villa to rest, but she insisted on going to the old estate.

“I want to get that diary. Right now. Immediately.”

Her tone left no room for argument.

Damien couldn’t dissuade her, so he had Felix drive to the Hart family’s abandoned estate.

Damien held Grace’s hand, a flashlight in his other, carefully shielding her.

“Watch your step.”

Grace knew the way well and started up the stairs. Every step made the old floorboards groan in protest, the sound echoing through the empty house.

“This is it.”

Grace pushed open the small door to the attic.

It was narrow, cramped, and dark.

Even with the flashlight, it felt devoid of any warmth.

Inside was only a dilapidated little bed and a table with a broken leg.

It was haunting to think that the Hart family’s own flesh and blood had been discarded here, left to rot in this squalor for more years than she’d ever lived in the light.

“The third floorboard…”
