She paused, as if searching for the right words.
“I can’t pretend nothing happened, and I can’t accept your help with a clear conscience.”
“So, Damien.”
Grace stood up, her back to him as she looked out at the sunset over Cardenia Lake. Her silhouette was thin but resolute.
“Don’t look for me again.”
“Let me go, and let yourself go, too.”
Damien sat there, watching her.
A gust of wind swept up the fallen leaves from the ground.
He tasted something metallic rising in his throat and forced it back down.
*If this is what you want.*
*If my presence only brings you pain and reminds you of those nightmares.*
*Then…*
Damien slowly rose to his feet.
He looked at Grace’s back, and tears finally streamed down his cheeks.
He smiled.
Before Grace could utter any more harsh words, he spoke first.
His voice was hoarse, filled with endless longing.
“Alright.”
“I’ll listen to you.”
Damien bowed his head deeply.
Then he turned and walked toward the black sedan, back toward his own endless darkness.
Grace listened as the sound of his footsteps faded, and the tears she’d been holding back finally broke free.
She didn’t turn around.
The setting sun stretched their shadows long, yet they pointed in opposite directions, never to intersect again.
