"Grace, this place… it must have cost a lot, right?"
Her grandmother's clouded eyes were filled with anxiety. "I have my pension. I won't spend your money…"
"I have money."
Grace helped her grandmother sit down on the sofa. "I still have my company, remember?"
Nadia, ever perceptive, brought them two glasses of warm water and then discreetly retreated to the kitchen.
Her grandmother held the glass, her gaze fixed on Grace's leg.
Even when she was sitting, the posture of that leg looked stiff.
Her grandmother reached out a trembling hand, wanting to touch it but not daring to.
"Grace, your leg…"
Tears streamed down the old woman's face, splashing onto the back of her hand. "It's my fault, I'm useless. I couldn't protect you… That damn old man, his heart's been eaten by a dog!"
"He says it was for your own good, but that's all bullshit!"
Grace looked down at her grandmother's wrinkled hand and gently took it in hers.
"Grandma, it's all in the past."
"It's not over!" her grandmother exclaimed, slapping her thigh. "I've thought it through. If Bastian were alive to see his father push you into a pit of fire, he'd be rolling in his grave! I was doing it for Bastian, that's true, but I can't sacrifice your life for him!"
Grace felt as if something had struck her heart.
A bitter ache.
So, there was still someone in this world who remembered that her life mattered, too.
"Grace, from now on, it'll just be the two of us. I'll take care of you."
Her grandmother wiped away her tears, her eyes becoming firm. "We're never going back to that house again!"
Grace smiled.
"Okay, we won't go back."
She turned to look out the window, where the pale early winter sun was filtering in.
Even if a bottomless abyss lay ahead, at least in this moment, she was no longer alone.
***
By the time her grandmother was settled, the sky had grown completely dark.
Grace used the excuse of having to work overtime and limped out of the complex.
It wasn't that she didn't want to stay.
