Elliot pointed toward the police car and roared.
"You personally destroyed her last hope! You're a hundred times more despicable than that Calder!"
The grandmother, who had been silent all this time, finally reacted.
She shakily pulled on her husband's sleeve, her face a mask of disbelief.
"Old man... you... you did this on purpose?"
"Didn't you tell me... Grace agreed to it?"
So, the grandmother had been kept in the dark too.
Or perhaps, she had chosen to believe the lie that gave her the most comfort.
The grandfather flung her hand away, enraged and embarrassed.
"What does a woman know!"
"I did this for Bastian's revenge! For our family, the Hawkes!"
"For your family?"
Elliot laughed.
A laugh filled with immense sorrow.
"You don't have a family anymore."
"From the moment you agreed to this, you were utterly alone."
Elliot turned his back, unable to look at the utterly selfish old man for another second.
"Reap what you sow."
"The law may not be able to punish you for your cold-heartedness, but your conscience will be your judge for the rest of your life."
With that, Elliot strode toward the police car.
The grandmother stood frozen.
She looked at Elliot's retreating back, then at the familiar yet strange man beside her, her husband.
Suddenly, as if possessed.
She spat viciously at her husband's face.
"You bastard!"
"Bastian adored Grace! How could you?!"
The old woman wailed, stumbling toward the police car.
"Grace! Grace!"
"Your grandfather... he just wasn't in his right mind. Grace!"
She pressed her hands against the car window, looking at the unconscious Grace inside.
Looking at that pale face and the marks on her neck.
Tears of regret fell like broken strands of pearls.
"Grandma is so sorry..."
"Grandma is useless..."
Inside the car.
