"You don't deserve to die," Elliot said, shoving him away and dusting off his hands in disgust.
"If Grace knew you were acting like this, she'd probably run even farther away."
Damien slumped back into his chair, unfazed.
He straightened his rumpled collar and took a pack of cigarettes from a drawer.
He pulled one out and offered it to Elliot.
"Want one?"
Elliot stared at him coldly. "I don't smoke with degenerates."
Damien wasn't offended. He lit one for himself and took a deep drag.
"I know you hate me." Damien exhaled a cloud of smoke, his eyes on Elliot through the haze. "I hate myself, too."
"But Elliot, now is not the time to be yelling at me."
"She's been missing for ten days. You know her condition, that leg of hers… it can't handle the cold."
"And she doesn't have much money on her."
At the mention of Grace's health, Elliot's expression softened slightly, his anger subsiding a little.
"I know her grandparents are from the Northwest," Damien said, extinguishing the cigarette. He leaned forward, a flicker of light finally returning to his dead eyes.
"I've checked all the traffic cameras. They disappeared in a small county in the Northwest."
"It's a mountainous region, with complex terrain and a lot of unmapped back roads."
"You have a background in criminal investigation. Finding people is your specialty."
"Help me."
It was the first time Damien had ever asked for help, and he was asking his rival.
Elliot sneered, crossing his arms and leaning against the desk.
"Why should I help you? She's my friend. I'll find her myself."
"And when I do, I won't tell you."
"I'll take her far away, where you'll never see her again for the rest of your life."
Damien instinctively clenched his fists, the urge to punch Elliot in the face rising within him. But he restrained himself.
"You don't have to tell me… as long as you can confirm she's safe."
"As long as you can get her medicine to her."
"Elliot, I'm begging you."
Damien stood up and actually began to bow.
Elliot was so startled he quickly stepped aside.
"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Elliot stared at the humbled man before him, a mix of emotions churning inside.
