"We thought we could go on like that forever."
The grandfather's voice choked with emotion.
"But that monster from the Hart family suddenly decided he wanted to take Grace back."
"Said he wanted to fulfill his duties as a father."
"Ha!"
The old man spat on the ground in disgust.
"Fulfill his duties? He just wanted Grace to be a scapegoat for his precious daughter!"
"We didn't want to let her go."
"But we're just two useless old folks, with no power and no money."
"The Hart family threatened to have people come and tear down our house if we didn't."
"And... and they said if Grace didn't go back, they'd give all the properties in her mother's name to Lilian."
Grace’s tears flowed freely once more.
It wasn't that her grandparents didn't want her; they were trying to protect her.
And all this time, she had thought she was just a burden to them.
With a sharp crack, the teacup in Damien’s hand shattered.
Shards of porcelain pierced his palm, and blood began to trickle out.
"Damien, you're bleeding!"
Grace cried out, grabbing his hand.
Seeing his bloodied palm, she wept with a fresh wave of heartache.
"It's nothing."
Damien casually wiped his hand on his clothes.
"It doesn't hurt."
This pain was nothing compared to what Grace had suffered.
"Grandpa."
Damien suddenly spoke, his tone serious.
"Come back to Jarrow City with me."
The old man was taken aback and quickly waved his hands.
"No, no, we can't. We're just old bones. We'd only be a burden to Grace in Jarrow City."
"Besides, that city is so expensive. We wouldn't be used to it."
"I have a house,"
Damien cut him off.
"I have a private estate in Jarrow City, right in the heart of downtown."
"The yard is huge. You can grow vegetables, even raise chickens."
"It's only a ten-minute drive from the best hospital."
"And there’s no one else there, just me and Grace."
"I was hoping you two would come and help me look after the place."
