The air in the living room was thick with tension.
Grace stared hard at Alistair Hart, her hand crushing the photograph she was holding.
"What did you say?"
Her voice trembled.
"My grandparents... what happened to them?"
After her mother's death, her grandparents had been so overcome with grief that they moved back to their old hometown to recover.
Once Alistair Hart brought her back, he completely cut off her contact with her mother's family, never allowing her to visit.
He wouldn't even let her call them.
He had lied, telling her they didn't want to see her, that they blamed her for their daughter's death.
"Hmph."
Alistair Hart sneered, adjusting his collar and regaining some of his usual callousness.
"Did you think that with the Hart family's collapse, it would just be me and your brothers who suffered?"
"Your grandfather co-signed for me back in the day. He put his name on a lot of documents."
"Now that the Hart family is bankrupt, the debt collectors are coming after everyone responsible. Naturally, they've come after them."
"Those two old folks were already in poor health."
"A few days ago, the collectors went to their town. They scared your grandmother so badly she had a stroke. She's lying in the county hospital right now."
"I hear they can't even afford the medical bills. She's just getting an IV in the hallway."
"Tsk, tsk. So pitiful."
Alistair Hart watched Grace’s expression as he spoke.
Seeing her face turn deathly pale, looking as if she might collapse, he knew he had her. Grace was wavering.
This daughter of his, as ruthless as she was to him, was utterly devoted to her dead mother and those two old fools.
"You're lying!"
Grace shrieked.
"How could my grandfather have co-signed for you? They cut ties with you years ago!"
"Believe it or not."
Alistair Hart shrugged, completely indifferent.
"The fact is, as long as the Hart family has a breath of life left, as long as I'm not dead, I can find a way to shoulder some of the debt."
"But if Lucian goes to prison, I'll have to sell off my last assets to get him out."
"When that happens, the creditors won't find any money with me, so they'll go after your grandparents."
"Just imagine, two seventy-year-olds, surrounded by a group of thugs demanding money."
