Even so, Emily was pretty happy because she knew she was getting closer and closer to her dreams.
Her superior was Rachel, 35 years old, unmarried, no boyfriend, and a woman who was quite serious and reserved.
On Emily's first day, Rachel seemed to have something against her, ordering her to do all sorts of errands like photocopying, getting coffee, and picking up deliveries... Basically, if Emily seemed idle, Rachel would definitely find something for her to do.
Seeing this, others started bossing Emily around too.
Emily did every task well, without any complaints. This made Rachel unable to scold her, but she didn't treat Emily any better either.
One afternoon, when everyone was having afternoon tea in the pantry, a male colleague saw Emily still busy and called out to her, "Emily, come over and take a break."
"Coming!" Emily just finished what she was doing and greeted everyone as she walked over.
The male colleague pushed a piece of mousse cake towards Emily and said with a smile, "This is for you, enjoy!"
"Thank you!" Emily expressed her gratitude.
Rachel and another female colleague were chatting over coffee, glancing at Emily with a jealous tone, "It's rare to see you being so considerate. I guess you're fawning over the pretty girl!"
Everyone in the office knew that Zach had a crush on Rachel, but she had a somewhat ambiguous attitude, so their relationship remained undefined.
Embarrassed, Zach said, "She's a newbie, of course we need to take care of her!"
"I didn't know you could be so nice to women!" Rachel snorted coldly and left with her coffee to her workstation.
Everyone exchanged glances, and Emily pushed the cake away, "I'm sorry, I better get back to work!"
Zach laughed and said, "Don't worry about it, Rachel's like that sometimes. Don't take it to heart!"
He'd attended a meeting with some higher-ups in the morning, with someone sneezing due to a cold. He didn't pay much attention then, but after a noontime drinking session followed by an afternoon meeting on the 30th floor, he began to feel unwell – lightheaded and in a daze.
Thinking he'd had too much to drink, he let others take charge of the meeting and went to the resting area behind the conference room to sleep.
Now as he woke up, with a sore throat and stuffy nose, he realized something was wrong.
Grabbing his suit jacket, he started heading out and noticed that the light in the design department was still on.
Initially, he thought someone had forgotten to turn off the light when leaving, but as he approached, he saw there was still someone working overtime.
"You should call it a day, no need to push yourself this hard!" Charlie leaned against the door and said with a heavy, nasal tone.
Emily thought it was the security patrol, so without looking up, she replied, "Sorry, I'll just stay a little bit longer and then I'll go!"
