Gab strode out, his tall silhouette gradually swallowed by the darkness. Yet even after he’d gone, it felt as if the weight of his presence still lingered in the room, leaving an oppressive silence in his wake.
......
By the time Gab returned to Silver Valley, it was the dead of night. The gates to the estate swung open with a slow, dignified hush, and Bruce’s car eased to a stop in front of the main house.
Gab stepped out and headed inside. As soon as his shoes touched the marble steps, the entire mansion lit up, one room after another.
He made his way up to the third floor, flanked by two maids who trailed behind, running a hot bath and setting out his pajamas.
Gab shrugged off his coat and tossed it onto the sofa, then walked straight through to the terrace. He pulled out his phone and made two quick calls, his voice low and businesslike.
Once he’d finished giving his instructions, he returned to his study and sank into the chair at his desk, rubbing his brow in fatigue.
When he finally opened his eyes, he glanced at the desk—and paused, frowning. He looked up at the maid who happened to be passing by. “Where’s the thing I left here?”
She looked a bit lost. “What thing, sir?”
“A keychain.”
The maid thought for a second, then replied, “Miss Nightingale was here earlier. Maybe she took it?”
Gab’s expression darkened. He pulled out his phone and dialed Nightingale’s number. She sounded surprised when she picked up, “Is there an assignment?”
Gab’s tone was cool. “Did you take something from my desk?”
