Eugene didn’t wait for Greg to speak this time. His expression darkened as he cut in, “You don’t need to learn from her—no matter how hard you try, you’ll never measure up.”
Jolin stared at Eugene in disbelief, her anger and hurt plain on her face. “Eugene, how could you say that to me?”
Eugene was known for his gentle manners and tolerance. For the first time, the Farley family saw him truly lose his temper.
With Eugene watching, Greg had no choice but to save face for Sylvia. He turned to Jolin and scolded her, “You were out of line first. Aren’t you going to apologize to Ms. Jarvis?”
“Apologize? To a PR rep? I’d rather be the laughingstock of the whole city!” Jolin spat out furiously and turned to storm off.
“Stop right there!” Eugene caught up to her and grabbed her wrist, his voice cold and unyielding. “I told you to apologize.”
“I won’t apologize! She’s just someone my dad hired to work for our family. She doesn’t deserve my apology!” Jealousy twisted Jolin’s words into something poisonous. “Eugene, I thought you were different from other men. Turns out, you’re just as shameless—blinded by a pretty face! How many times have you slept with her? Is that why you keep pushing her company on us? If you like her so much, why not just marry her and make her Mrs. Winters? Then she wouldn’t have to parade around in public, would she?”
Everyone in the room—even Greg—looked stricken, except for Sylvia, who stayed impassive.
A few guests had gathered nearby, drawn by the commotion. Among them was Evelyn, who’d come with her boss as an assistant. With her outgoing nature, she’d already made a few friends at the party.
Spotting the drama, the crowd edged closer. Evelyn immediately noticed Sylvia.
Unlike the others, Sylvia wasn’t dressed in a cocktail dress or anything flashy—just a simple, professional suit. Yet even in the crowd, she was the one who caught everyone’s eye.
Some people were simply born to be at the center of things.
A girl in a pale blue dress standing beside Evelyn let out a soft laugh. “Looks like Mr. Winters really has a thing for Sylvia, standing up for her like that.”
Evelyn’s gaze flickered as she whispered, “Isn’t she just in PR? Would the Winters family really go for someone like her?”
The girl in blue smirked, her tone edged with sarcasm. “Not a chance. She might make a decent mistress, but that’s about it.”
