"I'm picking up some clothes for my son. That boy never thinks about these things—always working. He's leaving on a business trip tomorrow, so I figured I'd come out and see what he needs."
Regina looked Isabelle up and down. "You're absolutely gorgeous!"
The compliment made Isabelle blush, and she quickly grabbed Regina's arm to pull her along.
"It's so rare to run into someone I know! I'm shopping for clothes too. Want to help me pick some out?" Isabelle said.
"Sure! And you can help me pick things for my son while we're at it. You young people probably have similar taste."
They ended up wandering around the mall together for two or three hours.
Regina asked, "Have you eaten yet? Why don't you come over for dinner?"
The two of them were loaded down with shopping bags, so they sat on a bench in the mall drinking coffee and taking a break.
"I can't, Ms. Baxter. I need to get home. I still have some things to take care of."
She'd completely forgotten that Damian had said he'd be home for dinner. It was already past eight, and she had no idea if he was waiting for her or if he'd eaten already.
"That works. I've got something to do anyway. Let's meet up again soon!"
"Sounds good, Ms. Baxter." She gave Regina an affectionate squeeze.
The two of them said quick goodbyes and parted ways.
Once she got in the car, she checked her phone and saw that "Hubby" had called her and sent a WhatsApp message.
"When are you coming home?"
Her heart jumped, and she quickly called him back. "Sorry, I ran into someone I know at the mall and we got to chatting."
"It's fine. When will you be home?"
"Heading back now. Should be home in about ten minutes."
"I'll wait for you."
"Okay."
Having someone in her life suddenly felt strange but... good. There was something she couldn't quite name about being asked to come home that she actually liked.
For some reason, her ears turned red.
She started the car and drove toward the apartment.
On the way, she passed a flower vendor and couldn't resist pulling over to buy a bunch of tulips.
She parked in the garage and got out with the tulips in her arms, a smile spreading across her face.
"You're back." Damian's voice came from somewhere nearby.
Isabelle jumped and instinctively took a step back.
The moment turned awkward, and Isabelle quickly tried to recover. She shut the car door and walked toward him.
"What are you doing down here?" she asked.
"Waiting for you."
His eyes dropped to the tulips in her arms.
