"You're right. When they divorced, Dad was quite generous, just to speed up the process of marrying Sabrina. If we count Mom's shares, they still have less than us. Even if Dad gives all of his shares to his late-in-life child, we'd still hold the advantage. But Mom is still in her current condition. Who has control over her shares?"
"Lillian does," Colin said. "Doesn't Lillian have authority over Mom's shares? She was the one who signed the divorce papers on Mom's behalf. Mom gave her instructions and power of attorney over a decade ago. She even specified how things should be divided. The money and shares weren't officially partitioned during the divorce, but she has a documented mental illness. We can consult the lawyer about this, see if Lillian can help us."
"Let's go. Downstairs to see the lawyer."
Back at the mansion that evening, Martin still hadn't returned from work.
They were supposed to be on their honeymoon, and Martin had promised he would come home early every day to be with her.
But it seemed he was working late again.
Bella couldn't wait any longer and had her dinner early. She tried to persuade Sabrina, "Mom, don't wait. You should eat too. Why do you have to wait for him to come back before you have dinner?"
"My heart is pounding. I have a feeling today is different from usual. You don't understand this sense of panic. I feel like something bad is going to happen. I can't eat. You go on up to rest after you're done. You work so hard during the day, you should get proper rest at night. Whatever is going on, it's not your concern. Alright, alright, stop waiting with me."
"You just said you feel like today is different," Bella countered. "Even if Mr. Mercer and Brandon had a fight, it's not a huge deal. Don't worry about it, just relax. Eat something. If Mr. Mercer comes back late, he'll have eaten already. He's the chairman of the company; his secretaries and assistants wouldn't let him go hungry. Even if you want to show him your affection, you shouldn't starve yourself."
"I'm worried something is going to happen."
Just as she finished speaking, they heard the sound of a car outside.
Sabrina immediately stood up. "He's back."
It was indeed Martin, and he was wearing a thunderous expression.
He got out of the car and didn't even respond to the maid's greeting.
Sabrina knew something was wrong and quickly went to meet him.
"Martin, you're home." As she spoke, she took his briefcase and handed it to a nearby maid, then diligently placed his slippers at his feet.
Martin grunted a faint, "Mm."
Sabrina kept a smile on her face. "What's wrong? When Brandon came back this afternoon, he was also scowling and seemed unhappy. He packed a bag, probably for a business trip, but he wouldn't say a word when I asked. Did you two have a fight?
This is the first time I've ever seen you two argue. There shouldn't be grudges between a father and son. Isn't there anything that you can't talk out as a family?"
Bella, who had been sitting in the living room, also got up and came over to greet him.
Seeing Sabrina's warm reception, Martin couldn't help but relax a little.
"It's those ungrateful brats. I'm not even dead yet, and they're already plotting how to divide up the family fortune."
His words set off alarm bells in Sabrina's mind.
