Halle frowned and walked over to Lemon, crouching down in front of him.
The poodle lifted his head slightly, gave Halle one lazy glance, then flopped back down on the pavement. Even his curls looked limp and defeated.
Halle was loose and relaxed at this hour. She squatted there and gave the dog a pat on the head. "What's wrong with you? Are you dying? You look completely wiped out."
Apparently offended by the commentary, Lemon ignored her.
"Where's your dad? Got tired of how fat you are and dumped you outside?"
Halle scratched behind Lemon's ears and felt her hand sink into a roll of pudge. "Good Lord. How did you let yourself go like this? You've been eating everything in sight."
She was fully absorbed in petting the dog and didn't notice James walk up behind her.
His voice drifted over, lazy and amused. "Don't body-shame my son. He doesn't need that kind of pressure."
Halle's hand paused mid-stroke. She straightened up slowly and found James standing there with wet hair, wearing house clothes. He'd clearly just gotten out of the shower and hadn't bothered drying off before coming outside.
She looked at Lemon's girth, then back at James. "He's shaped like a beach ball. This is a health issue at this point."
"Since when do you care so much about my kid?"
"Why'd you leave him outside in the middle of the night?"
"I just came out to get him after my shower."
"You didn't bring him inside before you showered?"
James smiled. "Okay, jokes aside. He's gotten unhealthy. I was planning to take him for another walk after I cleaned up. See how he's panting? That's from running laps. He's out of shape."
Halle glanced down at the dog, wheezing on the pavement. No wonder the barking had sounded so pitiful. "I thought you genuinely didn't mind him being fat."
"I'd love my kid at any size. But unhealthy is where I draw the line, so we're doing intensive walks. The goal is to slim him down within a month." James was grinning.
Halle turned to head inside.
James's eyes drifted over her dress, and the question came out casually. "Where'd you go? You weren't out long."
