Troy blurted it out without thinking. "No way!"
Ayla had never held any expectations for him, but even so, her heart froze solid. She couldn't understand it, and the anger burst out of her. "Troy, you don't love me. Then why have you kept dragging this out for so long?"
Because of his constant entanglement, she'd formed an alliance with Draven.
So she wasn't afraid of Troy!
But the heart doesn't take orders.
Ayla wasn't afraid of Troy, but every time she saw him, all the past wounds replayed over and over. She felt sad, and the pain split her open.
And every meeting forced her to relive the fact that Troy had never cared about her at all.
That only made the damage worse!
She really couldn't take it anymore. "Why? Why the hell do you keep clinging to me?"
Each sharp question slammed into his ears. Troy couldn't sit still anymore. He stood up and faced Ayla. She rarely revealed her true thoughts, but in this moment, the words almost spilled out on their own. "Because I don't want you to leave me!"
His voice dropped low, strained to the breaking point, like he was forcing it down. There was even a tight catch in his throat.
"Ayla, I won't let you walk away from me."
Step by step, Troy walked toward her. "That's why I keep clinging to you. If I stop, then you'll really leave me!"
Ayla was trembling all over. She didn't even know why.
Troy pulled her tightly into his arms. "Ayla, I don't know what's wrong with me, but I just don't want you to leave me right now!" He even gritted his teeth. "How could you divorce me so easily?"
Ayla clenched her teeth. "Let go of me."
"I won't!" Troy held her even tighter. Only now did he realize how thin she was. "Ayla, you used to love me, and now you have to keep loving me!" It was like an obsession had taken root. "You have to love me forever!"
Ayla closed her eyes and let the tears slide down. She was exhausted. "Troy, do you love me? Do you love me now?"
"I..." Troy couldn't say it. He didn't even know if he liked her or not. "I don't know. But I'm used to having you by my side!"
If it weren't for the divorce, Troy would never have realized this.
