The suffocating family dinner finally ended. Claudia and Barton walked out of the Grover mansion side by side.
"Claudia, I have an urgent client to meet. I'll have the driver take you home first. Don't wait up for me tonight; just go to bed when you're tired."
Seeing how desperate Barton was to get rid of her, Claudia—who usually minded her own business—suddenly spoke up.
"What kind of client is so important that you have to talk business during the holidays?"
Barton was entirely caught off guard. His composed, elegant wife never pried into his personal life.
"Claudia, we had an agreement before we got married. We respect each other's private lives. Are you trying to break that arrangement now?"
Their marriage was a purely strategic alliance forged for mutual benefit. There was no foundation of love. The only thing they owed each other was the public facade of a respectable marriage.
They had lived exactly like this for years. He couldn't fathom why she was suddenly interested in what he did behind closed doors.
As for the 'client,' it was just a cheap excuse.
Claudia stepped directly into his path, blocking him.
"I respect your privacy, but you owe me basic dignity. If I don't even have that, what is the point of being Mrs. Grover?"
Barton frowned in genuine annoyance.
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
She let out a cold, sharp laugh. "Are you really clueless, or just playing dumb? We both know what's going on."
"Besides, your mother was just breathing down our necks again to have a baby."
"We've been married for years, and I haven't gotten pregnant. The rumors are starting to get humiliating."
He scoffed in pure disbelief.
"Are you blaming me because you can't get pregnant?"
Her expression darkened instantly.
"Out of three hundred and sixty-five days a year, I can count on one hand the number of times you actually come home."
"I thought during the holidays, you wouldn't have as many 'social engagements'."
