Today was the twenty-seventh-anniversary celebration of the Shaw Group.
As one of Corbin Shaw's close friends, Andres White brought a gift to offer his congratulations, even though he had zero patience for such social functions.
"Why didn't the fascinating Miss Vance come with you?"
Seeing Hans and Murray trailing behind Andres, Corbin couldn't hide a flicker of disappointment.
Ever since crossing paths with Maeve Vance, Corbin felt every other woman paled in comparison.
He certainly harbored no unrealistic desires for her; he simply admired her unique, ruthless way of handling things.
Thinking about how exhausted Maeve had been last night from their intimate activities, Andres figured she was probably still curled up in bed.
A smile unconsciously filled Andres's eyes.
"The little lady has zero interest in these purely corporate cocktail parties. Besides, she has classes to attend."
Andres wasn't just making excuses.
Maeve had stated long ago that she hated all forms of socializing.
She especially loathed pointless business galas.
Unless it was absolutely necessary, she made it clear he shouldn't bother her with these events.
There was another reason Maeve didn't want to be seen with Andres in public.
She hated asking for trouble.
Andres held an extraordinary status in Aethelburg.
If their relationship went public, an endless stream of problems would follow.
She was young, had a fiery temper, and lacked the patience for drama.
Hearing that Maeve couldn't make it, Corbin looked a bit regretful.
"Our last gathering was ruined by Landon Hart, so I was hoping to find an opportunity to get everyone together to make it up to you."
At the mention of Landon, both men's expressions soured.
When Andres didn't respond, Corbin cleared his throat.
"I heard the Hart Group is currently facing bankruptcy."
Andres took a glass of red wine from a passing waiter's tray, slowly swirling the dark liquid.
"He offended the head of the Salazar family. It makes perfect sense that they're retaliating."
