Two days later, Maeve returned to Simon Grover's Lab C. As agreed, she was here to face the lab's ultimate test. Strangely, Simon was nowhere to be found, and Connor Yates, the leader of Team A, was also absent. Audrey Sinclair was the only one waiting for her.
"Miss Vance," Audrey began, her tone dripping with false formality, "I've been instructed by the boss to ask you one last time. Are you absolutely certain you want to proceed with the hell-level test?"
Maeve was already sick of answering that question. She offered a tight nod. "Without a doubt."
Audrey sneered. "Don't say I didn't warn you. This isn't some game. The boss values talent, and you clearly have the brains for this field. Put in a few years of grunt work here, and you might actually build a solid career. But if you insist on taking this ultimate test, you'll be permanently barred from Lab C when you fail."
Maeve tilted her head. "Wouldn't that make you incredibly happy?"
Audrey stiffened, caught off guard. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Maeve stepped into Audrey's personal space, lowering her voice to a lethal whisper. "We're both smart women. Let's not play dumb. From the moment your boss brought me here, you've looked at me like I'm a roach on your shoe. I know exactly why you hate me. You're in love with Simon Grover, aren't you?"
Her deepest secret laid bare so effortlessly, Audrey's smug facade crumbled. Maeve gave her shoulder a patronizing pat.
"Don't panic. I don't care about your messy love life. I'm just pointing out that if you want to protect your territory, you need to get rid of me quickly. The easiest way to do that is to ensure I fail this final test in a spectacular fashion. Miss Sinclair, with a golden opportunity like that handed to you, I don't understand why you're hesitating. Unless you actually want me working here, parading around your crush all day long?"
