Neil's rescue operation was a tough one. It wasn't until half past five that the doctors finally brought him out.

Maja looked at her father, who had an oxygen mask on his face, with a bitter feeling in her heart. "Doc, is my father's health really that bad?"

Neil had been busy with company matters for years, never bothering to get a health check-up. Whenever he felt pain, he'd just pop a painkiller and soldier on.

Maja remembered that her father had been like this since her mother was alive. Her mother always told him that as long as they had enough money, they could move to Crystalbrook Valley, get a nice house with a yard to plant flowers and vegetables, and live a comfortable life.

But when her mother first married her father, they were dirt poor. Neil felt guilty and refused the suggestion, always dreaming of making big bucks to give his wife a better life.

Maja had resented her father for not understanding what her mother truly wanted. By the time the company started making profits, her mother had already passed away.

After a lifetime of hard work, they never got to enjoy the good life, and instead, Cristina reaped the benefits.

The doctor took off his mask and looked at her, "Are you a family member?"

"I'm his daughter."

The doctor signaled for the others to wheel Neil into the ward, then pointed to his office, "It's a bit complicated. Come to my office and let's talk."

Maja nodded. As soon as the door shut, the doctor sighed.

"Ms. Pennyfeather, your father has advanced liver cancer. At this stage, we don't recommend surgery. He might still have a year left, so you should prepare yourselves mentally."

Maja felt like her head was about to explode. She thought she must have heard wrong.

This can't be happening!

"Doc, are you sure?"

"That's what the test results show. The cancer cells have spread. He must've been feeling pain these past few years but didn't pay enough attention to it. Now all we can do is manage the pain with medication and arrange for hospitalization as soon as possible. Also, he needs to rest more. His transaminase levels are high, which is caused by staying up late. At his age, health is the most important thing. All else is just wasted effort. You need to persuade him to rest well and ensure adequate sleep."

Maja stood there, unable to utter a word.

The doctor knew how hard it was for family members to accept this news. He sighed, not knowing what to say.

Maja didn't know how she left the office.

...

At the airport, Ian and his crew were waiting. He glanced around, noticing that Maja hadn't replied to his message.

"Ian, did you argue with Maja? You're the man; you should be more accommodating. Do you understand? Maja is excellent; she just has a strong personality."

Ian remained aloof, his impression of Maja hitting rock bottom. Was it because he'd agreed to solve the second round of financing, so now she didn't even bother to put on a show for these old guys?

"Ian, I'm talking to you."

Ian finally responded, not wanting to upset Holden. After all, the doctors had repeatedly warned that Holden couldn't withstand any stress, no matter how minor.

"I understand. She probably got held up at work today. I'll call her later."

Holden finally nodded in satisfaction, and a smile appeared on his face.

"That's more like it. I'll call Maja later too. She must've been too busy to pick me up; otherwise, she would've come. I specifically called Rosewood Manor to let them know. I wonder if something came up."

In Holden's eyes, there must be a reason Maja hadn't come.

But in Ian's eyes, he thought Maja was doing it on purpose.

She hadn't come to pick him up last time, and she didn't come to pick up Holden this time. Was this the Pennyfeather family's way of educating their children?
