Carlene looked at Ian, feeling somewhat touched. She knew in her heart that he still cared about her.

"Ian, you still care about me."

Ian sat on the sofa without responding.

After Phelps had finished checking Carlene's finger, he was about to leave, but Carlene held out her other hand.

"I think this hand feels off too."

Although Phelps didn't understand, he knew that Carlene was intentionally trying to keep him there.

But why?

Phelps subconsciously glanced at Ian.

Ian, however, did not look at him. He seemed a bit absent-minded.

Phelps had heard from Tyler last night that Ian was flirting with someone else.

But now, seeing how Ian treated Carlene, he didn't seem to care about other people's opinions. The flirting was probably just Tyler's nonsense.

Phelps patiently checked Carlene's other hand again, then looked at her with a smile.

"Ms. Shepard, can I leave now?"

The whole process took forty minutes. Carlene's lips curled up.

"Dinner's ready. Wanna stick around for a bite?"

Phelps shook his head and glanced at his watch. "Nah, I've got stuff to deal with."

Carlene didn't try to find other excuses to keep Phelps any longer, due to the time they had already spent.

Meanwhile, Phelps received three calls from Abner, all asking him to come treat him.

After leaving the Shepard family, Phelps went straight to the hospital.

On the other side, Maja's forehead was drenched with sweat, and her lips were pale. She kept asking if her hand could recover.

The doctor looked at her uncertainly. If he told her she couldn't recover, she might have a breakdown. But considering the state of her hand, full recovery would be difficult.

"Ms. Pennyfeather, I can't be sure."

Upon hearing this, Maja could only hold back her tears.

Carol wanted to comfort her, but Maja said, "Carol, I want to rest a bit. You can go back first."

Carol didn't know what to say. She silently stayed with her for half an hour before leaving.

Maja kept thinking about what the doctor had said, and tears welled up in her eyes.

Phelps was already standing up, checking the sheet in his hand.

"Yes, you'll need to stay in the hospital for a few days. I need to check on you regularly. Oh, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Phelps. I work at this hospital. Once your hand gets a bit better, you can be discharged. This is a special request from the Miller family."

So he was Phelps.

Maja felt somewhat relieved. "As long as it can recover, that's good."

Phelps looked at her. "If you feel pain, I can give you an anesthetic."

"No need."

Hearing that it could recover, Maja's eyes brightened considerably. She leaned back on the bed and said no more.

Phelps had a bunch of paperwork to deal with, so he didn't chat more.

Maja hadn't had breakfast since morning, and now Carol was back, bringing her breakfast and a small table to put in front of her.

Maja's left hand could still move, she could drink soup herself with a spoon.

Carol said, "This must be Carlene's doing. How could it be such a coincidence that she got injured too?"

With Carol's personality, she would love to go straight to Carlene and confront her.

She looked at Maja, but Maja's attitude was always calm. She closed her eyes and seemed to be thinking about something.
