She knew damn well that asking Selena to call Grandpa Holden on her behalf would be a dead end.

But if she could just get through to Ian and explain the whole situation, maybe there would be a sliver of hope that he'd want to keep the baby.

Selena scowled, chin held high. "Get her in there; I've scheduled the surgery."

"Ms. Casson."

But Selena was as cold as ice.

"Maja, why the hell do you think that if you called Ian, he'd let you keep the baby? Did he ever say he was into you?"

Maja clammed up. She didn't have the energy to argue; she could barely stand.

They snuck through the hospital, using the Raymond family's influence to get Maja straight into the operating room.

Guessing that Maja might kick up a fuss, Selena had the doctor knock her out completely.

The doctor had been in the Raymond family's pocket for years; he'd follow Selena's orders.

"Ms. Casson, I need to run some tests first. Are you sure about the surgery?"

"Absolutely."

Selena couldn't stand Maja, and she wouldn't let her son Ian be embarrassed.

The Doctor got the message and closed the operating room door.

Half an hour later, the doctor emerged.

"Ms. Casson, we've run the tests; she's pregnant alright, but it's ectopic. Surgery is a must."

Selena was taken aback, then let out a cold laugh.

Was this Maja's karma?

The baby was doomed from the start.

"Proceed with the surgery then."

The doctor nodded. "She's not far along; a painless abortion would be most suitable. She's already under anesthesia; I'll get started right away."

Selena didn't really give a damn; the baby couldn't have survived anyway. But she gave the doctor a serious look and said, "Don't let her know it was ectopic; make her think she lost a normal pregnancy."

"For the next week, it's best to avoid sexual activity. You need to replenish nutrients."

The doctor finished, then opened the door to leave.

Maja finally managed to speak: "I'm going to sue you."

The doctor looked back at her in surprise and said, "Ms. Pennyfeather, Ms. Casson is your mother-in-law. She had the legal right to sign the consent form. I've dealt with many similar cases; suing won't do you any good. It's best if you leave."

Maja clenched the sheets, a sense of helplessness welling up within her.

The doctor was right; suing wouldn't do any good.

She laid back down on the bed. Even though she couldn't feel the baby, the pain was overwhelming.

She curled up on the bed, like a wounded animal tending to its wounds in solitude.

She left the hospital in a daze that night.

Her phone was right next to her, and Selena was sure Maja wouldn't spill the beans to Grandpa Holden. His health wasn't great, and if he heard the news and something happened, she'd be the black sheep of the Raymond family.

Maja felt her stomach churning; she wanted to throw up, but there was nothing to bring up.
