Ian had just hopped in the car when his phone started buzzing - it was a call from Carlene.
"Ian, I've been waiting here for twenty minutes, where are you?"
Ian glanced at his wristwatch, "Just got out of a meeting. I'll be there in twenty."
"Always so buried in your work, how could you leave me standing here?"
"Find somewhere to sit."
Carlene went quiet for a moment, her eyes welling up.
"Ian, you've changed so much. You weren't like this."
Ian rubbed his temples, his tone flat, "I'm heading your way now, already booked a table for us."
Carlene's face brightened up a bit, "Okay, I'll wait."
After hanging up, Ian zoned out in his seat.
Jeff, in the front, stole a glance at him through the rear-view mirror. He kept his hands on the wheel, saying nothing.
Twenty minutes later, the car pulled up at the airport.
Carlene had been waiting outside. Seeing Ian's car, her face lit up. She hurried over and flung the car door open.
"Ian!"
She whispered his name and hugged him tightly, "I've missed you so much."
Ian stiffened, not responding.
Carlene held on for a moment, then smiled, "Let's go eat. Jeff, step on it, I'm starving."
She let him go and took a seat.
Ian reached out and stowed her suitcase by his feet. She had brought a tiny suitcase, no need to put it in the trunk. Carlene felt a warmth spread in her chest seeing him do this. With his undeniably attractive looks and current demeanor, Ian seemed particularly charming.
Carlene blushed a bit, smiling.
"I'm sorry for saying you've changed, you haven't. You're still so good to me."
Ian didn't respond, he leaned back after putting the suitcase away.
"How's life abroad?"
"You never called. If I hadn't reached out, were you planning on never contacting me?"
"No."
Carlene was completely reassured. She had been worried while abroad, even coming back early to avoid prolonging the silence between them.
The restaurant doors opened, and Carlene came face to face with another person. Ian also turned to look, noticing Samuel.
Samuel had a set of car keys in his hand, seeing the two of them, he smirked.
"Ms. Shepard, you're back."
Carlene regained her composure, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
"Mr. Brown, long time no see."
Samuel was known for his sweet talk, no secret there. He glanced at Ian, then back at Carlene, a knowing smile on his face.
"Mr. Raymond, congratulations, the woman you've waited years for is finally back, I guess you'll be getting a divorce soon?"
Ian's face turned even colder, his gaze sharp on Samuel. But due to Samuel's words, Carlene looked up at Ian expectantly. Sensing that Ian wouldn't respond, she quickly defended him.
"Ian's wife was arranged by Holden, he probably needs some time. Mr. Brown, why are you so interested in other people's family matters?"
Samuel's hand was already on the glass door, "Isn't it natural to care about my own affairs? After all, only when Mr. Raymond gets a divorce, can I be open about being with her."
