He kept his gaze lowered, not looking towards her.
In his peripheral vision, she was picking up the papers on the desk, organizing them one by one.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, followed by Dana's voice.
"Mr. Raymond."
"Come in."
His full attention was on his computer.
Dana glanced at Maja, her lips curving slightly upward, as she walked over.
"I just got a call from Carlene. She said she got you a gift and had it express delivered. Here you go, Mr. Raymond."
To unsettle Maja, Dana deliberately undid the cufflink on her sleeve.
"She asked if you liked it. If not, the delivery guy is still downstairs, you can exchange it for another style."
Maja instantly recognized it as the cufflink she had given Ian.
When she bought the cufflink, she was filled with guilt and spent a lot of time choosing it, so it was deeply imprinted in her memory.
She now understood Carlene's intentions.
But this seemed a bit much, and her attention to Ian was overly intense.
Ian looked at the cufflink. He had already forgotten which one Maja had given him, so he took it.
"Why did Carlene suddenly want to give me something?"
Dana sent a triumphant glance at Maja. This was the power of Carlene. Just mentioning her name was enough to distract Ian.
She had thought that Maja would back down, but Maja's face was too calm, as if this scene had not disturbed her at all.
What was going on?
Was this woman pretending?
As she was about to speak, Ian's phone rang. It was Carlene calling.
Ian answered the phone and Carlene's voice came through.
"Ian, did you get the gift?"
"Yeah."
"Do you like it? I took a long time choosing it. I think it suits you."
He looked up at Maja, but Maja wasn't looking at him. She was still organizing the papers on the desk.
When she finished, she smiled at him.
"Mr. Raymond, I'm free now, I don't want to disturb your work."
Ian felt a little uneasy for some reason he couldn't understand. But he had already decided to keep a distance from Maja, so he just blurted out.
"You don't have to make soup for me anymore."
Both he and Maja knew why Maja would make soup for him.
But Dana didn't understand. She thought Ian had taken Carlene's call and then rejected this woman on the spot.
Dana's face was full of triumph, her smirk barely controllable.
Maja blinked, then sighed in relief. She was about to get busy and really didn't have time to make soup.
Moreover, Ian was going to Rosewood Manor at irregular intervals. If he found out the soup was made by Maria, it would be awkward.
"Sure."
Maja agreed so quickly it made Ian feel a bit uncomfortable.
