Bastard didn’t cut it. Athena declared in her mind, tears streaming down her eyes.
Inhaling deeply, she slipped her hand into Ewan’s, tears pouring out the more when he clasped it and squeezed. She wanted to say something to him, but words failed her.
Unlike she who hadn’t known her parents, Ewan had known them, had laughed with them, idolized them, and they had been taken from him.
Worse, the monster had tried to kill him off too. Why?! To what end! Was Herbert’s heart that blackened with hatred?
"Why did he want to kill my boy then too?" Florence whispered, long abandoning her control over her eye faucet. Her shoulders quivered as she spoke.
"I don’t know..." Spider whispered, looking forlorn, grieved like them all, when he noted that the question had been meant for him.
His face fell, eyes squeezing shut for a second as if fighting old memories. "I’ve been working on discovering this truth for years, and it eluded me every goddamn time. Maybe he was just drunk on power?"
A pause, his jaw tightening. "But it’s obvious that this grey virus was something like that too... something he worked on with the minister of health and other likes of him in other countries most likely... then taste it out on the masses... gaining on both sides. Money and successful experiments of something that might be used as a weapon during military invasions and whatnot."
"True." Susan concurred weakly, looking aggrieved, her palms rubbing her thighs anxiously. "I would bet my ass that the CIA is aware of this."
Athena wasn’t sure of that. But she couldn’t rule it away.
"They are..." Aiden spoke then, drafting all attention to him. His expression was grave, one hand raking his hair back. "But they are on our side, only they are not working with us. It turns out that Herbert isn’t patriotic... The virus was to be sold on the black market. I got it from an intel. Both it and its cure."
"It was why they had attacked Athena, right? Because she was obstructing them from making their stupid gains! And they had used humans as their test subjects! Millions of people!"
If Gianna had a gun, and Herbert was before her, she would have shot the male to pieces.
Her fingers curled into fists as she glared at Zane next. "And should he be here?"
Zane’s head shot toward her immediately, eyes flashing with barely contained rage. His chest rose sharply as he leaned forward. "You think I’m in on this? That I will put lives at risk because of stupid experiments?"
Gianna shrugged, lifting her chin. "You have proved that aforetime, that you are just as heartless as your wicked father!"
Zane looked like he wanted to spring out of his seat, veins bulging from the side of his neck. "You don’t get to play the victim card!"
"The victim card?" Gianna chuckled drily, though her voice trembled. "How am I not sure you or your father wasn’t behind my family’s death!... You lot are so good at orchestrating accidents!"
Zane paled. His breath hitched. "That’s not possible. It was just an incident... don’t turn your misery to me because you have seen an opportunity. You gold-digger..."
"That’s enough."
