"Are you well rested now?"
Athena raised a brow, watching her grandmother, who had poked her head into the room after a contemplative knock. Her silence informed the older woman that she wasn’t fooled.
But a sigh escaped her lips when Florence entered the room, followed closely by old Mr. Thorne, and then her friends — Chelsea, Gianna, and Areso.
Without asking, she knew that Aiden had implicated her. Seeing as she had just finished a call with him, he had probably informed them that she was still awake by 10:25 p.m.
Somehow, they had known he had been talking with her. They had contacted him, and somehow, he had betrayed her.
She sighed, keeping aside the documents she had collected from the side table — documents that one of Ewan’s assistants had given her to check on. It was more load and stress on her, but she would rather die than admit that she was tired, than give up. She was bent on succeeding.
So far, the news had been taken down — well, in regard to the company. Ewan’s image was left for him to handle. So far, he hadn’t granted an interview.
It wasn’t her business though; her new acquisition was. Already, sales were coming back together, and Spider, in coalition, had repaired the breach in the system.
Even though she had told the former not to bother, he had insisted, using the excuse that she had saved his life.
Not wanting to bother with his possible intention — or if Ewan had a role in that — she had let him be, focusing on the company, which Sandro was handling well in her absence sometimes.
Maybe she should have handed it over to him? But then, it wouldn’t be tasty, nor had it been that since the takeover. Even her children were weary of her.
"Athena..."
She refocused on her visitors, leaving the train of thought that held her captive.
"Ma..." she paused, ruffled her hair, and sat up properly on the bed. She had avoided this meeting for four days now, always citing being busy and all, but it seemed that her luck had run out.
"How are you doing, my dear?"
Together with avoiding the meeting, she had also avoided the dining table. To be honest, it had been exhausting somewhat. She missed talking with her grandparents.
"I’m fine," she muttered, reclining on the headboard, knees up, hands folded loosely across her chest. "To what do I owe this visit?"
She watched as her friends took positions on the bed, while her grandparents sat on the not-so-long sofa.
Old Mr. Thorne cleared his throat thereafter. "We just want to talk, darling. You have been avoiding us... avoiding this meeting. Even the kids are not happy..."
Athena sighed. She had noticed, but what was she to do, when their eyes held questions about Ewan — questions and answers she had no business dwelling on?
"I’m sorry about that. I’ve just been busy. You know, with the merging, the new acquisition, going to the lab..."
Old Mr. Thorne nodded slowly. "I know... you are bearing more than you can carry, Athena."
A pause followed where Athena’s lips pressed together thinly.
