"If you need anything, don’t hesitate to let me know," Athena’s ex-boss from the CIA spoke after shaking hands with Old Mr. Thorne.
With him were Eric and Shawn, and two other officials who had once been colleagues with Athena and Susan’s mother, Scarlett. Close colleagues, who had quit the agency, as Athena had found out in the few minutes she had spent with them at the start of the party.
"Of course, Manuel. I will not forget," Athena replied with a smile, her tone laced with gratitude. She hugged the boss when he opened his arms, a fatherly smile resting on his lips.
"I mean it," he whispered before letting her go.
She smiled, nodded her thanks, and hugged her old colleagues one after another before wishing them safe travels to their location tonight.
The large hall was empty now except for family, the working gang, the agents protecting the estate, and then Antonio and Herbert.
Susan nudged Athena softly, and without the former speaking, Athena knew her younger friend wanted her to send off the males too—one her boss, the other her boyfriend.
Fiancé. She reminded herself, taking a deep breath.
"So, what are we going to do about this invasion? Ewan, you seem to know Kael from somewhere..." Herbert started, looking around, needing to sit down.
Ewan exchanged a glance with Zane, who maintained a calm demeanor but got the message that Ewan had sent him.
"Dad, I am sure the family wants to rest tonight, not talk about strategies and what not. It’s been a long day. We can send in our thoughts tomorrow..." As Zane spoke, he held his father gently by the arm. "And you need to rest too. Isn’t that so, Doctor Athena?"
Athena nodded immediately. "Your son is right, Herbert. You should go to bed. But of course, I will appreciate whatever resources you can help us with tomorrow."
Herbert looked between the two and huffed. "You two forget that I am younger than the old man over there..."
Old Mr. Thorne chuckled heartily. "Not stronger though. You are the one who has been toyed with the Grey Virus twice..."
Herbert laughed, shook his head, and started toward the door, Zane following. Ewan would share with him whatever updates came through their private inbox.
"Babe, you should go with them too... you need to rest."
But Antonio was shaking his head, a frown starting across his face. "I need to stay with you... while you talk about plans..."
As he spoke, he noticed that with the exit of Zane and his father, the others were also filtering out of the hall, with Ewan taking the lead.
They were giving him and Athena space—which meant they expected her to convince him to leave.
His frown deepened, barely listening as Athena rattled reasons why she wanted him gone–that he needed to rest and all.
Did she forget that tomorrow was the weekend?
"And like I said before, I don’t want you getting involved... as you can see, this is dangerous territory."
"But I am already involved! I am your fiancé." His tone, louder than before, took on a harsher quality.
Athena raised a brow, that single gesture enough to pour a bucket of cold water on his temper.
"Surely, you can understand me..." His tone softened, pleading for understanding.
But Athena’s mind was made up. "Just trust me, Antonio. I will see you out."
Wheew. She shook her head slowly and started toward the mansion briskly.
