Chapter 420: Loud Silence II

Athena’s fingers pressed lightly to Spider’s wrist, counting the faint but steady beats beneath her touch.

Relief came in increments, in the way his pulse no longer faltered, the way the rise and fall of his chest found a more natural rhythm. She brushed damp strands of hair from his forehead, speaking softly under her breath—words not meant for anyone but him, though she wasn’t sure he could hear.

"How is he doing?"

The voice made her flinch somewhat, and she jerked her gaze over her shoulder. Ewan stood just inside the doorway, shadows pooling around him. She hadn’t even heard him follow.

For a moment, all she could do was stare. He looked so at ease leaning against the frame, arms folded, yet the bandage wrapped around his thigh betrayed otherwise.

Meanwhile, the question lingered in the air, heavy and careful, the kind of question that asked more than it appeared to.

"I didn’t know you were here," she admitted finally, her hand retreating from Spider’s wrist.

His mouth curved faintly, not quite a smile. "I didn’t think you would."

Athena turned back to the bed, her brow tightening. She wasn’t sure how to measure Spider’s recovery—one hour he seemed stable, the next he drifted into alarming silence. The uncertainty gnawed at her, and she hated not having answers.

"He’s holding on," she said, mostly for her own reassurance.

"And Lucas?" Ewan’s voice followed, quieter now.

Her lips parted, then pressed shut again before she answered. "He’ll be moving by Monday. Stronger than Spider at the moment, but still not himself."

That brought a certain silence, thicker than before. Ewan didn’t push for more conversation, and she didn’t elaborate. The air between them swelled with things unsaid, things too complicated to talk about.

"Let’s leave him to rest," Athena murmured finally, breaking the weight, rising from the bedside.

They stepped into the hallway together, their footsteps hushed against the floor. For a time, there was only the sound of the house creaking with their subtle movements. Then Ewan asked, almost too casually, "Antonio. Is everything alright?"

She stopped, just slightly, her head turning enough to glance at him. There was something beneath the question—stifled concern, maybe even a trace of hesitation he didn’t want her to catch.

Her heart tugged. She wanted to tell him, to spill the argument, the way Antonio’s voice had cracked with frustration, the way his hand had tightened around her arm. But no. That didn’t feel right, not now.

She couldn’t discuss her boyfriend with her ex-husband. It just didn’t mix.

"Everything’s fine," she said instead, her tone brisk, final.

Ewan’s eyes lingered on her face, however, searching. Then he nodded once, not pushing further.

The vibration came first—sharp against the quiet. Ewan pulled his phone from his pocket, brows pulling together in a frown as the screen lit up.

"From Kael," he muttered.

Athena’s chest tightened. "What is it?"

He read in silence for a moment, eyes narrowing, jaw hardening. She stepped closer without realizing, her voice sharper this time. "Ewan. What’s the problem?"

He exhaled through his nose, lips flattening. "Kael knows."

Her stomach dropped. "Knows what?"

"That I had a hand in the attack."

Before she could respond, the phone buzzed again—this time an incoming call. Kael.

Their eyes met, a silent exchange. Then Ewan answered, placing it on speaker.

Kael’s voice filled the hall, thick with gloat, thick with unrestrained rage. "You think I wouldn’t find out, Ewan? That you could dance into my turf, kill my men, and walk away unseen? You’ve angered me, you’ve broken the deal and you’ll regret it."

Athena felt the blood drain from her face, but Ewan remained unnervingly calm. His mind worked visibly, sharp behind his eyes.

"Do you have proof, Kael?" he asked evenly.
