The conversation at the table shifted as the elders began trading stories about pregnancy and parenthood. Bridget was beaming, her face lit up with a joy so pure it looked like she might never stop smiling.
She had assumed that young people these days were all about their private time and wouldn't dream of having children right after the wedding. She'd heard enough stories about the younger generation prioritizing their careers or choosing to be child-free entirely.
Given how independent and career-driven Amelia was, Bridget figured they would wait at least two or three years. She hadn't expected Amelia to be this efficient. To think, they weren't even married yet and she was already pregnant.
Bridget was all smiles, the lines of her face deepening with every one of them, and her fondness for Amelia had long since crossed into something closer to adoration.
"Jeremy, please be careful! You're spinning her around like that, what if she falls?" Bridget barked, her voice sharp with sudden maternal panic. She wasn't about to let anything happen to her precious great-grandchild.
Jeremy, looking just as nervous as his grandmother, immediately stopped. He carefully eased Amelia back into her seat, hovering over her as if she were made of glass.
Amelia didn't know whether to laugh or cry. She wasn't even showing yet, but they were treating her like she was moments away from delivery. Did she really need someone to hold her hand just to sit down?
Bridget reached out, her weathered hand gently patting the back of Amelia's. Her voice was thick with tenderness and anticipation. "Amelia, dear, you've been through a lot... You have to be so careful during these first three months. If there's anything you want to eat, or anything you can't stand the sight of, you must tell Whitney or Jeremy... Don't you dare hold back for the sake of the baby or yourself."
Bridget's eyes grew misty. She dabbed at them with a handkerchief before breaking into another wide grin. The other elders chimed in immediately, a chorus of voices offering advice on everything from prenatal diets to daily routines. It was as if they wanted to pour every ounce of their collective wisdom into her head at once.
The atmosphere at the table was already celebratory, but this news turned it into a double victory. The room grew loud and lively, the guests so caught up in the excitement that they forgot all about the gourmet food cooling in front of them.
Eventually, the family's restlessness won out. They arranged for Ethan Laurence, the most respected obstetrician in Brookhaven, and had him bring his team and equipment directly to the house to examine Amelia on the spot.
Amelia could only marvel at the sheer weight of the Curran name. One pregnancy announcement and they had relocated an entire clinic to the living room.
After a thorough check-up, Ethan gave the room a reassuring smile. "Bridget, everyone, you can rest easy. Both Ms. Nygard and the baby are perfectly healthy. She's about seven weeks along, and all her vitals are exactly where they should be."
