Cold Husband Burning Regret: The Divorce He Couldn't Handle novel Chapter 628

Wesley looked up, his gaze lingering on her face for a few seconds as if confirming something. When he finally spoke, his voice was low and raspy. “Dad told you everything?”

“He did.”

Charlotte Sterling sat down beside him, maintaining a careful distance.

She found herself at a loss for how to comfort him.

“I’m fine, you don’t need to worry.”

Wesley forced a smile, but Charlotte knew better. No matter his feelings for Shane Rayburn, seeing him die not only at the hands of the Rayburn patriarch but right before his eyes… it was only natural that he’d have trouble accepting it.

After a long moment, she spoke. “This will all pass, right, Wesley?”

He was silent for a few seconds before offering a faint smile. “Yeah, it will all pass.”

Charlotte didn’t press the issue further, instead changing the subject by asking him to show her around Eldermere City the next day.

Seeing her so full of life, Wesley couldn’t bring himself to refuse, despite his low spirits, and reluctantly agreed.

Once back in her room, Charlotte picked up her phone and called Julian.

The next day, news that the Rayburn patriarch had been taken in for questioning leaked to the press. Soon, the media was digging up every detail they could find and splashing it across the headlines.

Shortly after, the news of Shane’s death also began trending.

Caleb Rayburn had anticipated the media storm and had already managed the necessary contacts. Before long, all of Shane's dirty laundry was aired out, including the murder of the eldest Rayburn daughter, Kate Rayburn.

Overnight, the news hit the city’s elite like a bombshell. Every major news outlet in Eldermere City was fighting for the story, with some even speculating that the Rayburn family was “cleaning house.”

In the living room of the Rayburn Mansion, Sean tossed a tablet onto the coffee table. The screen was still lit, filled with headlines about the Rayburn family.

He rubbed his temples and turned to Caleb, who was standing by the window. “We’ve managed to suppress the talk about Dad, but what about Shane’s real identity? Why haven’t you explained that? She wasn’t exactly innocent, but she was deceived by Hulda. Now the kid’s gone, and everyone online is dragging her name through the mud… This isn’t right.”

One should respect the dead.

No matter how many mistakes Shane had made in life, death should have settled the score. It was time to close that chapter.

Charlotte had just stepped into the foyer and paused when she heard her father’s words, not wanting to interrupt.

“She wasn’t Shane,” Caleb stated flatly.

His definitive answer left Sean speechless. Caleb continued, “She was forced to be the sixth child of the Rayburn family for all those years. Now that she’s dead, should she still be counted as a Rayburn?”

Sean choked. “What else would she be?”

“She’d be herself, of course.”

Caleb’s words completely confused Sean. Just then, Charlotte walked in. “No one knew Shane’s true origin, and now, no one ever will. In death, she has become herself again, but the tarnished reputation belongs to ‘Shane,’ a person who is no longer connected to her. That’s what you mean, isn’t it, Uncle Caleb?”
