Hanley said, “Maybe they climbed up from the tree next to the building. Stray cats have climbed up that way before.”
Terence said, “I'll notify property management and have them look into it, so no one else gets hurt.”
Terence turned to Hanley. “Don't be afraid. As long as I'm here, nothing can hurt you. You can stay with us for now.”
Lucas added, “You can sleep in my bed tonight. I’ll protect you.”
Lucas nodded silently. In the past, he never would have accepted such an offer. But he had been through a lot recently. After the Cross Group went bankrupt, they had been living in a small, rundown apartment.
His father was almost never home because of work, and his grandmother was always out playing mahjong, ignoring him completely. He had spent a period fending for himself, getting through one dark night after another. It was only then that he realized how much he’d taken his happiness for granted and how terribly he’d treated his mother. Perhaps this was karma.
Besides, after the scare he just had, this place felt like a safe harbor.
Hanley went with Lucas and Liana to play.
Natalie looked at Terence and said, “Hold out your hand.” Terence did as she asked.
Natalie pressed her fingers against his wrist. His pulse was racing.
“Try to stand up again,” Natalie said.
Terence held onto the wheelchair and stood up, giving Natalie a sheepish grin. She prompted, “Try to walk over here.”
Terence took two shaky, uncertain steps before his strength failed him, and he collapsed forward into Natalie's embrace. “What's wrong? Still can't do it?” she asked.
“I feel like I can walk, but I don't seem to have the strength,” Terence said, resting his head on Natalie's shoulder and holding her tight.
He wasn't unable to walk; he just wanted an excuse to hold her.
