Chapter 1440: Night Snack

"I’d go against the world to help her."

"Then—"

"But that’s my choice." She said, "There were other options. I simply chose to go against those above me, and I prepared for the consequences that follow. Did you?"

Dane swallowed. "No... please... my mother—"

"You’re starting to piss me off, Dane." Her hand moved casually. A crystalline block unfurled from the floor and snaked around him.

With a flick of her wrist he was flung forward, stopped a breath away from her face as if caught on a wire.

"Listen," she said, "I don’t give a crap about your mother. What matters is you crossed us and did something, and I want to know what that is."

"P-promise me you’ll keep my mother safe if I talk,"

Lyanna burst into laughter.

"I’ve truly gone soft. It seems there’s been a mistake here."

"Urgh!"

The frost laced his clothes and chilled his bones.

"Tell me, Dane, what part of our interaction do you think is bargaining? You’re going to die, and so is your mother, eventually. The only thing you have a modicum of control over is how painful it’s going to be. It’s been a while now, I hope you resist."

"M-monster,"

Lyanna smiled.

"That I am."

In the silence that followed, Dane’s screams tore through the small apartment, but the sound didn’t make it outside.

After a few minutes, Lyanna stood in the bathroom sink, washing her bloodied arms.

’It’s worse than I thought.’

Throughout the day, she’d visited a total of the eighty inconsistencies she determined earlier this morning. Of them all, five had turned out to be spies.

Lyanna had gone through her file, but hadn’t found any irregularities. Everything had been cleared, yet three of the five assistants had mentioned her name.

As night descended, and everyone retired to their room, Caldor found himself wandering the mansion halls.

He’d tried to get closer to her during their fight, but seemed to have made things worse.

’She’ll never want to talk to me again. I should’ve just played dead. Even the coliseum rats have better love lives.’

Brooding, Caldor made his way to the kitchen for a night snack. They had placed all the teams in a singular mansion within the grand coliseum. Though each team had their area, and members their rooms, some aspects were common areas, like the kitchen.
