After a bit of small talk, Betty soon excused herself and left the two men alone. Anyway, she was meaning to go shopping a bit. Most men didn’t enjoy shopping, and this included Tom. He was just too mild-mannered to complain.
Rather, if he found out she’d do a lot of shopping, he’d insist on coming regardless of how bored he’d be.
He also said it was so someone would carry her stuff, forgetting they had decent spaces and...she had a higher level than him. She could carry him if she wanted to, so a few shopping bags definitely weren’t enough to make her arms tired.
Anyway, back to the two men, Tom took the Lord to the Specialty Store, which had a lot of new items and stock.
Each time he went there, Michael was amazed. By this time, there was an even a bigger variety than before. There were even small electric appliances available now!
The most common ’low energy’ items there, except for lighting, were small fans, analog clocks, kettles, slow cookers, thermostats, and so on.
How long had it been since this place was established? They managed to make so many already?!
Then again, Alterra probably did not lack the money to drown their researchers with funds...
Of course, the capability of their current portable solar panels was still very small but it was already very good. They could at least be used to charge phones and power very basic functions like lighting.
Speaking of solar panels, they were increasing in stock every time. "Maybe we’d have enough to export soon."
The equipment still required a lot of contribution points, so for now, it was mostly Alterrans or people from satellites who could afford it.
That said, charging stations—most of which were owned by citizens who bought aforementioned solar panels—proved to be a very lucrative business.
It was also a new trend in cafes and tea houses to have charging stations. This way, people could spend money on products while they waited for their Terran phones to charge (which would take several hours, anyway).
Tom then brought the Lord to the new Post Street with the new buildings, introducing them to their functions.
Michael nodded. "Eventually, we might expand our trades beyond the region too, this will indeed be useful."
Then he thought of a business idea.
They could have an outpost of the Post Office in Bright!
That was to say: They could collect letters from their population (likely their own aborigines, since Terrans would unlikely have a pen pal in other towns) and then go to the Post office to receive them by batch in their stead.
Although they, the middlemen, had to declare their real names when sending and receiving letters in the Post (and this meant the actual Bright citizen’s name would not be used if they used their services), it would be fine as long as they wrote the names of the real sender and recipient in the envelope to avoid confusion.
He took note of this, and this would be something to be discussed with his own elders when he got back home.
Moving on, he also bought as much stock of the pharmacy products, both Miss Althea’s and the System’s. When it came to these things, one could not have too much.
After this, they also had a snack (Tom’s treat), which they decided to eat by the nearby park. Anyway, Michael really didn’t have an itinerary. He was just waiting for his sister to finally leave the hotel (whenever that may be).
The park seemed to always have some activity. It was early morning, and there were quite a few people there. A lot of jobs had flexible times or had different schedules and shifts, so establishments and facilities had people at all times.
Most were walking, some were having picnics, while some were playing around.
There were also some people playing chess, which had fixtures in some areas of the park, under the canopy of a tree. This made the games, which could last hours as comfortable as they could be.
Not long after that, the relatively quiet area welcomed the sound of children’s giggles and chatters. They turned to see two dogs followed by children trying to ride them.
"Fufiii Fuffiiiii!"
"Let me ride on youuu!
"Snowww!"
"You’re so flufffyyyy can I hug youuu!?"
"Come now kids, Fufi is a dad now and he must be tired,"
Woof!
