“How am I supposed to win my wife back if I can’t be a little shameless?”
Harold just stared at him, at a loss for words.
“So, are you really leaving on that business trip tomorrow?”
“You think I’d lie to Isabella about something like that?”
Harold gave a small smile. “No, I didn’t mean that. I was just asking.”
“You weren’t just making conversation,” Ethan shot back. “You asked because you wanted to know. I’ll be gone for at least ten days, maybe even two weeks. That’s good news for you, right? No one around to compete with you for Isabella.”
“You don’t have to go, you know. Couldn’t you send Jeremy or Frank? Your brothers are more than capable,” Harold replied, clearly trying to provoke him.
Ethan paused before answering. “No, I’ll go. Maybe if I’m gone for a while, Isabella will finally get some peace. She’s sick of having me around.”
Six months ago, he’d been the man she loved most in the world. Now, he was the one she wanted to avoid at all costs.
Harold turned to look at him. “You really have changed, Ethan.”
“Everyone changes.”
Ethan watched Cynthia and Isabella walk into the main house, their figures disappearing from view. “But every change comes with a price.”
Sometimes you have to take a hit or lose something important before you realize you need to change.
