“I’ll go back and talk to my parents,” Ethan said quietly.
“And I’ll have a word with Sophia too. She’s in her twenties now. It’s about time she learned to be a little less stubborn.”
Stephanie nodded, her voice gentle but firm. “I’ve spoken with your parents too. They won’t argue with me, not to my face at least, but who knows what they’re really thinking. Ethan, I’m getting old. Every day feels like a gift. I’m already halfway to the next world,” she said with a tired smile.
“I can’t keep running around fixing everything anymore. You’ll have to take care of your own business. Even if you and Isabella move out after you get married, if your parents don’t accept her, they’ll still find ways to get between you two.”
“I know, Grandma. I’ll handle it. This time, I won’t try to force them. I’ll take it slow and help them see Isabella for who she really is. Once they understand her and see all the good in her, I think they’ll come around.”
Stephanie smiled, looking relieved. “I’m glad you’re thinking about it this way.”
She glanced at the clock and let out a little sigh. “It’s getting late. I’m tired and need to rest. You should sleep early too. Tomorrow, get up bright and early. I’ll go with you to apologize to Isabella.”
Ethan sprang to his feet and moved to help his grandmother back to her room.
She waved him off with a soft chuckle. “Go on, get some rest yourself. I’m not so old that I need you waiting on me hand and foot.”
Stephanie settled herself and looked at Ethan fondly. “You know, the best thing you boys could ever do for me is just settle down, get married, and start your own families without all this drama. I’m still nagging Jeremy to get his act together, and now you’ve got your own mess. I raised all of you to be so capable, but when it comes to relationships, you make me worry myself gray.”
