“If I lose to you, I just hope you’ll treat Isabella right. Love her, cherish her, spoil her for the rest of your life. Make her so happy she never once regrets picking you,” Ethan said. “But if you ever hurt her, I’ll do whatever it takes to get her away from you.”
Harold looked at him steadily. “Relax. You won’t get the chance. If I win, I’ll take care of her forever. Even if I lose, I’ll still treat her well. I’ll look after her like a friend should.”
Ethan met his eyes for a long time before finally saying, “Harold, I’ll admit it. You’re a better man than I am. Let’s keep things fair between us.”
He couldn’t deny it anymore. Now that Isabella wasn’t his wife, he had nothing over Harold.
Harold nodded. “I’ve always said we should compete fairly. You’ve lost your advantage, but honestly, so have I. Thanks to you, Isabella keeps her distance from me too. If we were just friends, she’d have no problem hanging out with me.”
She might even be okay with dating him, but when it came to marriage, Isabella just shut down. Her short time married into a wealthy family had left scars she couldn’t ignore. She knew exactly how it felt, and now she wanted nothing to do with that life again. So Harold wasn’t in any better position.
Ethan just pressed his lips together and stayed quiet.
Harold finished his coffee, set the cup aside, and said, “I should get back to work. Today’s coffee is on me.”
“No need. Just go. I’ll handle the bill.”
The Adams Group was one of The Cabinda Hotel’s investors, after all. Ethan could just put it on his tab and get a discount.
“Thanks then.”
Harold didn’t argue. He just left, leaving Ethan to pay.

Isabella had promised her friends a nice dinner, so she left the shop early and went home. She picked up a bunch of fresh groceries, laid everything out, and cooked up a whole meal by herself.
By the time her friends arrived, the dining table was covered with delicious dishes, and she’d even pulled out two bottles of Ethan’s good wine.
