“Even so, we have to wait for the ambulance,” Isabella said quietly.
Ethan was slipping in and out of consciousness, muttering about how hot he felt. He clung to Isabella, his hands wandering, but she held onto his wrists, keeping him in check. He leaned in, trying to kiss her.
Laura waved her over. “Help him to the front. Wait there for the ambulance.”
Isabella didn’t argue. She wrapped her arm around Ethan and half-dragged him down the street.
Thankfully, as they reached the next intersection, the ambulance pulled up. Isabella and the paramedics managed to get Ethan on board, and he was whisked away to the hospital.
Meanwhile, Sophia was a bundle of nerves in the car as her mom pulled her away from the scene. She begged, “Mom, please stop the car. Let me go back and check on Ethan. He and Isabella are already divorced. They should cut ties for good.”
Jennifer, who had rushed out without her usual driver or bodyguards, kept her eyes on the road. “Sophia, stay out of Ethan’s business.”
“If Ethan can finally let go of Natalie, that might not be such a bad thing. Natalie’s married now. He can’t spend his whole life holding onto her. And I know I’m not thrilled about Isabella either, but if she can actually get Ethan to fall for her, if they become a real couple, maybe even give me a grandchild, well, I could live with that. It’s better than letting Ethan pine for Natalie forever.”
Sophia was frantic. “Mom, please, we have to go back. Ethan could be in real trouble.”
“What could possibly happen to him?” Jennifer asked.
Sophia hesitated, then blurted out, “I put something in the coffee, Mom. It’s a drug, it makes people… act out, lose control. I didn’t know exactly how it would work.”
Jennifer’s grip on the steering wheel tightened.
