She didn’t go home. Instead, she went straight to the Lane family’s house.
After getting rid of Sophia, Ethan turned around, slipped off his shoes, and held them out to Isabella.
Isabella frowned. “Ethan, what’s with you? Why are you taking off your shoes?”
He grinned. “Babe, you’re the only one I want holding my shoes. Don’t listen to whatever Sophia said. No one else gets that honor but you. Or hey, maybe I could carry your shoes from now on. How about that?”
“Ethan, stop calling me that. Don’t call me ‘babe’ or ‘wife’ ever again. We’re getting divorced, remember? And I don’t care who carries your shoes. It’s definitely not going to be me.” She looked at him like he was ridiculous, pushed his shoes away, and started to walk off.
Ethan quickly put his shoes back on and hurried after her, apologizing with every step. “Isabella, I’m sorry. I should’ve kicked Sophia out the second she started acting up. I really thought she wouldn’t dare try anything if I was here.”
“Yeah, I thought so too. Turns out I gave you too much credit.”
He kept apologizing as they walked. “I’ll talk to her when I get home. I swear, nothing like this will ever happen again.”
“Your promises don’t mean much. Sophia has her own two feet. If she wants to show up and stir up trouble, you’re not going to stop her. What, are you going to break her legs or something?”
Isabella stopped and turned to face him. “Ethan, if you just kept your distance, if you stopped showing up in my life, Sophia wouldn’t bother coming here to make a scene. The real problem isn’t her. It’s your family never accepting me. You’re the reason I keep getting hurt like this.”
Ethan couldn’t find anything to say.
