As Natalie walked in, she said, “I wanted to come with you, but you wouldn’t let me. That’s why I’m only getting here now. I figured it’s better not to show up with you in front of Isabella, just in case she gets the wrong idea about us.”
If anything, her words made things sound even more suspicious.
Isabella, lying in bed, overheard her from the next room and didn’t even flinch. She was done caring about Ethan. Whatever happened between him and Natalie couldn’t hurt her anymore.
Natalie crossed the little sitting room and came into the bedroom. Isabella stayed where she was, stretched out on the bed, not bothering to sit up.
“Natalie, what brings you by?” Isabella said, her voice calm.
Natalie set a fancy-looking box down on the nightstand and smiled. “I wanted to check on you. How are you feeling? Any better?”
She fussed with the box, making sure Isabella saw it. “I heard about your accident and wanted to come sooner, but I’ve been swamped. The second I got through all my chores, I rushed over. I brought you this bird’s nest tonic. It’s the good stuff, really expensive, over ten thousand for a box.”
Isabella still didn’t move. She was the one who’d gotten hurt. If she wanted to stay in bed, nobody could say a thing.
“Thanks, Natalie. I know you’re busy, so it’s nice of you to stop by so late.”
Natalie sat on the edge of the bed, then turned to Ethan. “Ethan, I’m kind of thirsty. Would you mind getting me a glass of warm water?”
Ethan nodded, left, and came back with a glass. She took a sip, then glanced at him and said, “Ethan, Isabella’s going to be fine, so you don’t have to worry too much. You should really take care of yourself. You’ve lost weight and those circles under your eyes are getting dark. You look worn out. Drink more of that soup I made for you. Rest up. You’ll need your strength if you want to take care of Isabella.”
