Aside from life and death, nothing really rattled Isabella. She could handle almost anything with that cool, steady calm of hers.
Laura, though, nearly lost it reading those online comments. Her hands actually shook, she was so angry.
“It’s about her relatives from back home, right? They tried to drag her through the mud, but now people from her old village are coming forward online to spill the real story. They’re talking about how her grandparents, uncles, and aunts used to bully her and her mom. It’s all coming out.”
Laura remembered Isabella mentioning she’d gone back to her hometown a few days ago. Now she realized it was to deal with this exact mess.
She laughed quietly. “Isabella always thinks ahead. She told everyone she was on a business trip, but really, she went home to get ready for what’s happening today. She knew those awful relatives would pull something like this.”
No wonder Isabella seemed so unbothered. She was ready for this drama long before it exploded online. She’d been waiting for her relatives to try and stir things up.
And of course, the truth came out. People online aren’t idiots, and they’re not going to blindly defend anyone. Once they heard what really happened back then, it was obvious who was in the wrong. Everyone sided with Isabella.
What Laura didn’t know was that as soon as Isabella got home from her morning run, she uploaded the recording she’d made in her office. The whole internet got to hear just how outrageous her relatives’ demands were.
Nobody in their right mind would have agreed to those terms.
“So don’t stress about Isabella,” Jesse said, his voice gentle. “She’s not the same girl she used to be. And you shouldn’t get worked up either. It’s not worth making yourself sick over.”
He paused, then switched topics. “How about I bring over breakfast in a bit? Wait for me at home, and we can eat together.”
Laura protested immediately. “I can make my own breakfast. You don’t have to go out of your way every single day. It’s such a long drive, and it must be exhausting. Plus, I’m always sleeping in. Half the time you show up, I’m still in bed.”
She was getting up earlier these days with the shop to run, but before, she’d stay up late writing with other authors, sometimes until two or three in the morning. She’d sleep through the morning, rarely seeing the sun before noon.
