Dacre watched his whole city was burned to the ground, smoke was spiraling to the bleak afternoon sky, tainted its bright light from the sun.
People and beasts screamed in agony as the royal warriors were still fighting their attacker, but the resistance was no longer a problem. The enemy would reach the palace anytime soon.
The gates to the palace were blocked, but it didn’t matter too, they would tear it down. There was no gates that could stand against such force.
Yet, the king could only watch everything crumble down. The kingdom that he built. The throne that belonged to him. His birthright. His legacy.
Khaos indeed played his schemes really well. He had thought everything for years, ever since they were little.
He made sure the royal line of the king was completely cut off. With the death of Xaden, where he didn’t have a child and with Dacre couldn’t sire his own child, it was effectively eradicated the royal bloodline.
Well played...
He didn’t even know until it was too late.
He wouldn’t have known about it if Killian had never told him.
His betrayal cut deeply into his heart, but so did his love for him.
Even so, he let go the chance to let his son lived. He let go the chance to win this battle, because the price that he should pay was Nycta’s death.
Called him stupid, but he couldn’t bring himself to kill her.
Probably it was guilt, probably it was the remaining feeling from their mate bond, probably because he actually cared about her.
Or probably he knew, ten black magic users that Rose offered to him was not enough, those ten couldn’t beat Khaos’s twenty black magic users. They were outnumbered and it was already very late.
Dacre stayed in the same place, this was his old bedroom, as far as he could remember, before he occupied the king’s bedroom. It felt nostalgic to be here again.
Twenty five years ago, when they were still little and innocent, the three of them used to spend their time in this room. Xaden and Khaos would come to his room and they would play together.
He didn’t know how thing changed, they used to be very close. But when they realized it, they had grown apart and in the end, they tried to kill each other.
Dacre watched as the attackers entered the palace, they swarmed the place without any resistance from the royal warriors.
Everything was a blur, but he remembered that a warrior informed him that Leonard died in the battle and followed by a series of his warrior leaders, one by one died.
He also remembered his warrior pleaded with him to leave the palace because the place was going to fall and he needed to flee.
"You are always be a little deceiver," Dacre said, shaking his head. "I should have seen that."
"No." Khaos shook his head and then spoke in a matter of fact tone. "You are not very smart to know that."
With that reply, Dacre actually threw his head back and laughed so hard. "You little brat." That was the word that he used to call his little brothers in the past, whenever they were doing something silly.
On the other hand, Khaos smiled slightly. He used to get annoyed with the moniker, but despite everything, he remembered the time when Dacre stood up for him whenever people talked about his shortcoming, where he couldn’t shift into his wolf.
He couldn’t do it not because he didn’t have wolf spirit, but because he couldn’t show the world about his true form, at least not yet.
"I see Logan and Rose turned their back on me," Dacre finally said in the end of his laughter. "You should know better not to trust that bitch or anyone in Wolfdale kingdom in this matter." Dacre tilted his head, as if he weighed his option. "Wolfdale kingdom has their own black magic users."
Khaos listened to him, where Dacre told him everything that Rose had offered.
"I thought you were going to take the offer. Nycta is not your destined mate. She had severed the bond between you two. There is no reason for you to save her life."
"I know." Dacre chuckled and then shook his head, agreed about how silly his decision was. "She is only seventeen. She is too young to die." There was a sad smile on his lips.
And with that, Dacre shifted into his beast and attacked Khaos.
