“Yvan, have you lost your mind?” Declan shouted, trying to grab Yvan. “What if something happens to you? Logan might still be safe…”
“I can’t leave him in any danger!” Yvan turned back, his eyes red, “I can’t let them down again, I have to save him, Declan. Do you understand this feeling?... He’s my own son, I’m not trying to be melodramatic here.”
Declan stared at Yvan for a long moment, then suddenly clenched his teeth, “Fine, I'm with you. Let's go in together.”
“You two…” Cyprian, trailing behind, caught up, “What are you thinking? Rushing in like that, do you think it will end well?”
But his words couldn’t stop Yvan now. With his heart in turmoil, every time someone was rescued he would rush over to see if Logan was among them, but he wasn’t. The newly rescued group didn’t include Logan either.
At that moment, Yvan, looking around at the devastation, felt the world spinning around him, his vision shaking wildly with despair.
Again, someone was rescued, but still no Logan.
Yvan felt a crushing sense of despair.
Even now, with all his power, with all his resources, in the face of such a disaster, he felt like a mere ant.
Yvan clenched his fists, no longer waiting, as Declan pulled out two sets of protective gear from the car and called out his name.
“Yvan!” Declan yelled, throwing a protective suit at Yvan, “Let’s go!”
“Wait, take the walkie-talkies and headsets. I’ll have someone go with you!” Cyprian knew he couldn’t stop Yvan now. No one could. He had his men hand over the equipment to Yvan, making sure he was fully kitted out, “Don’t get into trouble, Yvan, please… just don’t.”
Declan, holding a fire hose, blasted through the flames, the intense heat making Yvan feel like he was burning up inside his suit, drenching him in sweat as he gasped for air, “There’s a small corridor here, what was this place before?”
“I had my guys track the location from outside,” Cyprian’s voice came through the headset, “Looks like it used to be a diner, you're entering through what was the kitchen.”
The kitchen?
Something clicked in Yvan’s mind, a fleeting thought he couldn’t quite grasp, but deep down, something urged him to search this place…
Logan, if you’re still out there, please give me a sign, let me find you…
