Twenty minutes later, the group arrived at "The Cake Spot," and upon entering, Carl's expression visibly shifted. Back when Matilda was a game designer, Adrian Simpson, in his quest to win her over, had bought a cake from "The Cake Spot" for her and her colleagues. When Yvan caught wind of this, he, too, bought a different flavor cake from the same shop in a fit of jealousy, storming into Matilda's office to drop off the cake without a word.
Looking back, the memory seemed somewhat amusing, but as Carl stepped into the bakery once again, he was struck by a sense of wistful nostalgia.
It was surprising how, after all this time, they found themselves back at "The Cake Spot."
Criss, likely unaware of the past drama involving Matilda and Yvan, had unknowingly led them here, a testament to the ironic twists of fate that bring past and present together.
Yvan also recognized the shop but couldn't place why, simply attributing it to a previous visit. However, when Matilda saw the name of the shop, her face, like Carl's, changed color.
Back then, Yvan, not one for words, had bought the cake and left it for Matilda with a terse note: "Enjoy."
Criss, oblivious to the tension, found a large table and invited everyone to sit. Matilda felt awkward as Criss asked what she'd like to eat.
"Rich chocolate cake," blurted Yvan from across the table, instantly regretting his outburst.
How did he remember?
Matilda brushed her hair aside, her smile waning, "Let's go with that."
Carl: ...
Feeling helpless, Carl slapped his forehead, wondering how Yvan could bridge the gap back to Matilda. After all, she was surrounded by other impressive men, each no less worthy than Yvan. How much effort would Yvan need to put forth for Matilda to notice his change?
Meanwhile, in the executive office of Starlight Media, someone smirked, lips curling up at the thought.
"The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind," he mused, stroking the arm of his sofa, a playful grin on his face. His voice, deep and smooth, broke the silence.
Matilda... after all this time... you'll end up right back where I want you.
