Hearing someone describe her daughter as going astray, Rachel's face froze for a moment before she managed to say in a dry tone, "Grandma's right, Lynn, go to your room and practice your writing! This is grown-ups' business, why can't you keep your nose out of it?"
With tears in her eyes, Lynn, feeling rejected by her family, staggered up the stairs to her room. Yvan massaged his temples, feeling exhausted, and let out a sigh before continuing to walk out without stopping.
"You're leaving?"
Opal's authoritative tone hadn't lost its edge over the years. "You're really going to let this tear our family apart over Matilda?"
It wasn't about Matilda; it was about him. He was fed up with his grandmother's tyrannical control!
Yvan, not wanting to hurt the older generation with harsh words, bit his tongue and said nothing, but his steps quickened. His grandmother didn't chase after him; instead, she furiously gripped Violet's hand. "Look at the son you've raised!"
"Mom..." Violet, also blamed by Opal, felt wronged. "Yvan is an adult now. He should be able to make his own decisions. You can't treat him like a child, dictating his every move..."
"So, you're saying I'm wrong?" Opal's voice rose. "I'm doing this for his own good! For the good of the Boyd family! Without the Boyd family, would you have ever become the lady of a manor? Would you have a son as outstanding as Yvan?!"
Violet's face turned pale, and she fell silent.
With a slap, Lynn covered her face, the five or six-year-old girl quickly bursting into tears, frightened and confused about what she had done to anger her mother so suddenly...
Sitting in her wheelchair, Rachel's voice was hoarse as she grabbed Lynn's hair, yanking her back and forth, "Why aren't you Yvan's daughter, why—?!"
The woman, like a mad person, abused her daughter with all her might. Lynn, trembling, didn't dare make a sound, knowing that any noise would only bring more severe beatings.
She knew she wasn't Mr. Boyd's biological daughter, but her mother had insisted she pretend to be, to call him "Dad." She had done everything asked of her, so why... why was she still being punished?
