It was the first time Yvan had been so directly confronted by Matilda.
He had fantasized countless times about how he would defend himself if Matilda ever confronted him like this.
—But he had no defense to offer.
Yvan's Adam's apple bobbed, “Yes…”
“Don't say sorry to me; it's too precious.” Matilda chuckled softly, “What a waste, you only just found out I was innocent, and you call yourself the top young man of Sea City.”
Yvan was humiliated by Matilda, yet he couldn’t find the words to argue back.
Did she hate him? He'd take it all.
Matilda held Logan's hand, and sensing his mom's trembling, Logan whispered, “Mommy…”
“It's okay, mommy's not scared.” Matilda stroked Logan's face, then continued addressing Yvan, “So, what brings you here? To hassle me like last time? Do you think I can't live without you, so confident that I would always come back to you?”
“Matilda!” Yvan couldn’t help but raise his voice a little, “You don’t have to be so harsh!”
“Oh?” Matilda smirked, her smile cruel, “Sorry, but I've been through worse. Harsh words are nothing. Words can't hurt me, only you can, with your guns and your bullets and your fire.”
To her, Yvan's existence was the deepest wound.
Yvan's voice trembled, “Matilda, I now know everything about what happened five years ago, and I’ll soon clear your name... But there are new issues we need to address, I was hoping we could talk…”
“Talk about what?”
How did Yvan know…?
She had felt it too, as if a pair of unseen hands were still trying to push her into the mire, but Matilda was alone and clueless about where to start.
How did Yvan come by his information?
Seeing her shock, Yvan knew he had struck a chord and spoke softly, “Matilda… give me a chance. I know you hate me, but now that the past has been cleared up, there are others trying to harm you. You're alone and vulnerable, I… I can help. Can we at least talk about working together, even if it's just a partnership of convenience?”
He sounded so humble, Matilda stared at the man before her, “Can I trust you?”
Yvan felt a pang in his heart at her question.
He laughed self-deprecatingly, spreading his hands, “Matilda, without you, I have nothing.”
