A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 458

"...Talk about soldiers being soldiers, they lived up to the name!"

But they did make the effort to bring her back in the dead of night, and Matilda was anything but fussy. Besides, there was nothing romantic going on between them, so she led them straight to Godfrey's room, which was one of many in this part of the building. "You guys can crash here."

Cyprian took a tour around the apartment. "This place wasn't cheap, huh?"

"Right," Matilda confirmed.

"Yours?" he inquired.

Matilda was straightforward, "No, it belongs to my best friend and her old flame."

"...That sounds like a complicated relationship."

"And where are your best friend and her sweetheart now?"

"She... ran into some trouble," Matilda's smile stiffened for a moment before she softly added, "She'll be back."

Seeing her expression, Cyprian didn't pry further. He grabbed his buddy to head to the guest room for the night, his underling bubbling with excitement.

—"Man, Mr. Layton, it's my first time bunking with you. I'm so pumped..."

Cyprian felt his patience wearing thin. "Damn it! What are you excited about? I'm not gay!"

"Mr. Layton, it's purely out of admiration for you. You're the backbone of Wind Deity, our love for you is like an endless river..."

"What was she worried about?" Cyprian headed to the bathroom to wash up, his subordinate trailing behind him, only to be stopped by a threatening look from Cyprian, "Stand outside, don't move!"

"Roger!" The subordinate snapped to attention, standing guard outside the bathroom like he was on sentry duty. Matilda found the whole military act amusing. Watching Cyprian finish up, she told him, "Take care on your way out. I won’t see you off."

Cyprian grunted an acknowledgment, then he and his subordinate took their leave. Before leaving, the subordinate bowed deeply, "Thanks for having us!"

"No worries at all." Matilda found this young soldier earnest and endearing. Next to Cyprian, he seemed both naive and amusing.

After the men left, Matilda sighed and went back into Logan's room, where the little boy seemed to still be asleep, undisturbed by the morning's commotion. She breathed a sigh of relief and then closed the door behind her.

Once the door was shut, the previously sleeping Logan moved slightly, then his eyes snapped open, revealing a gaze that was deep and cool, without a trace of sleepiness.
