A Journey from Bitterness to Truth (Matilda and Yvan) novel Chapter 313

She sensed that someone was plotting against her.

In that moment, Matilda's gaze was icy and resolute, filled with an indomitable spirit, a match even for a man like Yvan. It turned out... she was also aware of the vague dangers lurking around her. It seemed he had underestimated her.

Yvan chuckled softly, acknowledging that Matilda was never a delicate flower sheltered from the storms. Her awareness didn’t surprise him.

“What have you found?” Matilda glanced back at Yvan, her look suggesting she didn’t believe he was behind the threat. After all, with Yvan’s capabilities, why would he choose such a convoluted method now?

“Aren’t you scared it was me?” Yvan asked quietly.

“You?” Matilda laughed, a hint of sarcasm in her voice. “If you wanted me dead, you have countless ways to make it happen. I’ve seen your ruthlessness. Today’s underhanded tactics don’t seem your style.”

Hearing her, Yvan felt a pang of guilt. He knew he might have wronged her deeply in the past, and the damage was done. How could he possibly make amends?

“I took a photo.” Yvan handed over his phone. “Before they fixed this railing, I snapped a shot of the cross-section. I had Carl check it out. The cut seems to be made with a power saw or a grinder, typical of such tools.”

A power saw, a grinder? Such bulky equipment wouldn’t be easy to conceal, suggesting someone had smuggled it in advance or tampered with the scene beforehand.

Matilda remained silent, her gaze fixed on the photo on Yvan’s phone. Thankfully, he had a backup; otherwise, they wouldn’t be able to compare the cuts. She then knelt to search for the matching piece of railing amidst the debris.

“Found it.” Matilda located the broken railing part she had fallen through earlier, devoid of dust, confirming her suspicion.

“It’s definitely made from the same material as the handrail.” Yvan observed the thick layer of dust around. “Recently hidden, blending in like a needle in a haystack, showing a keen sense of counter-surveillance.”

It was more like a form of revenge; Matilda was harsh on herself, thus even harsher on Yvan. She kept all truths to herself, bearing all consequences alone, enduring hardships few could stomach. If one day, Yvan suddenly realized her innocence—

That day would be his moment of utter regret.

And now, it had come.

Look, she had succeeded. The delayed truth felt so alien and yet so cruel, leaving Yvan defenseless. He wanted to confront Matilda, to ask how she could keep the real story to herself, deceive everyone, including him, just waiting for him to be filled with remorse!

Why could she always withdraw when the truth was almost within grasp? She didn’t care for it, preferring to suffer rather than reveal the truth, using it instead as a weapon for revenge!

Matilda stood there for a long time before finally looking back at Yvan, “Yes, because justice, when it finally arrives, is the most unforgettable lesson of them all.”
