Matilda turned just in time to bump into Adrian's friend, the very Rafferty Adrian always raved about.
Beside him was a woman with striking features who smiled at Matilda upon seeing her, "Heard so much about you."
"Hey there."
Rafferty nudged Adrian with a smirk, "Look at you, Mr. Simpson, how'd you manage to get a goddess to be your date?"
"Can't ever expect anything nice from you, can we?" Adrian chuckled and gave him a light pat on the shoulder, "Catch you backstage later, my favorite DJ's up."
"Got it." Rafferty nodded, his sharp eyes narrowing, a fleeting emotion passing through, making him all the more striking.
As they exchanged greetings, Yvan was surrounded by journalists bombarding him with questions.
"Mr. Boyd here alone tonight? Heard you had a date before, why not this time?"
Willow?
Yvan pondered for a moment, "Came to see some old friends on the guest list."
The media, sniffing out gossip, pressed on, "Who's this old friend?"
"Why haven't we heard about them if they're so close to Mr. Boyd?"
"Is it the Crowe family hosting?"
Adrian was caught up in business talks with Rafferty as the DJ sets began, each artist taking their turn for an hour-long solo before a collective B2B session. As the electronic music kicked off, the adrenaline in the room spiked, everyone moving to the rhythm.
Tired from the heels, Matilda excused herself to take in the seascape outside. The night deepened into winter, darkness enveloping everything except for the occasional lighthouse beam and the indoor lights from the deck, leaving vast darkness beyond.
The salty sea breeze played with her hair as she stared into the dark abyss below, pondering how serene it looked by day, yet so ominously engulfing at night.
Feeling her insignificance against the vastness of the sea, she contemplated the ease with which one could disappear without trace.
Lost in thought, she was startled by a voice behind her, "Matilda."
Turning around, she locked eyes with Yvan, his dark pupils reflecting the distant lighthouse like flickering stars. Stepping back, she leaned against the railing, their moment frozen in time.
