"You're saying they moved in together...?" Yvan's voice dropped to a whisper, his eyebrows knitting together in concern as he refocused on the report, "They're cohabiting now?!"
Carl quickly came to Matilda's defense, "Mr. Boyd, Orson found Ms. Thompson through a perfectly respectable roommate-finding app. They are merely flatmates—colleagues, nothing more."
"My thoughts?" Yvan scoffed with a wry chuckle, "Why don't you enlighten me about what you think I'm thinking?"
Carl's face flushed a shade of red, and he dipped his head even lower, avoiding Yvan's piercing gaze. "I wouldn't presume to guess at Mr. Boyd's thoughts."
Wouldn't dare?
Always claiming he wouldn't dare, yet brazen enough to take digs at him, both overt and covert. Such a loyal assistant he had!
Yvan held Carl's gaze for a long moment before speaking in a low, ominous tone, "Run a background check on this Orson fellow."
"We... we can't."
The color drained from Yvan's face at Carl's admission.
"What do you mean you can't? Who the hell is this Orson that he's off the grid?!"
Carl, attempting to keep his composure under Yvan's furious stare, explained, "Mr. Boyd, there's something complex about Orson's identity. Outwardly, he's just a game studio designer, but in reality, his past... it's as if he doesn't exist."
A chill ran through Yvan at the implication, his voice taking on an icy edge, "Do you understand what this means?"
Carl remained silent.
It's not possible, he thought, brushing aside any such notions from his mind.
He was just concerned about the unresolved truth behind that kidnapping incident... Yvan convinced himself, then asked, "Is there any other way to dig deeper on Orson?"
"It might take some doing..." Carl's response was tentative. Previous attempts had hit a wall; all traces of Orson had been scrubbed clean, which suggested powerful forces at play.
Yet Carl's uncertainty only served to stoke Yvan's ire once more.
"Keep looking! There's nobody in Sea City I can't find!" Yvan roared, "Unless he's a ghost who's appeared out of thin air!"
He refused to believe it. Who was Orson, and why was he untraceable?
