"Mr. Crawford, what's wrong with you recently?" Evie came over with her hands behind her back, glanced at Byron's gauze-wrapped arms, and mumbled, "Looks serious!"
Mia buried her head in Athena's arms, crying even louder.
Mia saw the strange woman running to her.
Byron got hurt because of her.
"Sorry!"
Evie apologized before Athena and Byron shot daggers with their eyes.
"Mia, sweetie."
Athena lowered her head, trying to get Mia's head out of her arms.
But Mia hugged her even tighter and refused to raise her head.
"Let Mommy touch your forehead and check your fever, OK, honey?" Athena coaxed gently, "Look. Daddy is worried about you."
Mia was finally convinced.
She raised her head, sobbing with tears in her eyes.
Athena touched her forehead.
Athena was still worried that her fever would return after what she had gone through.
"How is she?" Byron asked worriedly.
"Still burning up a little." Athena frowned slightly.
Before Mia could react, Evie took her out of Athena's arms and suggested, "Since we are in the hospital, I'll take her to the pediatrician. You watch him here."
Then she left before Mia could say anything.
Athena watched them leave in bewilderment.
But she was not worried. Evie had a lot of experience in taking care of Mia.
She withdrew her gaze and looked at Byron.
Byron was puzzled, then gasped as if he was in a lot of pain.
It took Athena a second to react. "What's wrong?"
"The anesthetic is starting to wear off, and it hurts..." Byron looked at Athena weakly, "The doctor said that the wound was so deep that she could see the bones. I don't know if she was telling the truth."
What if his wound bled again because of her struggle?
She didn't want him to suffer again.
"Mia is my daughter. Why are you thanking me?"
Athena didn't know what to say.
Byron had lost too much blood and was really dizzy. He held Athena's hand, closed his eyes wearily, and then said softly, "You don't have to thank me. It's my responsibility. I won't hesitate whether it's you or Mia."
Athena looked at him, mixed feelings in her eyes.
"Get some rest," she said lightly.
Byron nodded, still holding her hand. There was no sign of him letting it go.
"Stay with me," Byron mumbled.
Athena gave him a measuring look.
After a while, she said in a voice only she could hear, "OK."
