After coming out of the consultation room, Arianne tried to escape. “I think I’m fine now, Brian. Let’s go back now.”
Brian thought she was just afraid of getting poked by a needle so he comforted her. “It’s going to be fine. It’s just a blood test. It’ll be over before you know it.”
Arianne was rendered speechless. They walked into the phlebotomy department. She stared at the nurse and watched as she inserted the needle into her vein. About two test tubes full of her bright red blood were then collected.
Brian couldn’t help but mumble to himself. It didn’t seem like Arianne was scared… but why was she acting all fidgety then?
The blood test result came out very quickly. Arianne couldn’t make heads or tails of the small numbers on the paper. When they returned to the consultation room with the slip, Brian’s phone suddenly rang. “Madam, I’ll go answer the call first.”
The doctor took a look at the slip and announced the result to her. “You’re pregnant.”
In that instant, Arianne felt as though the blood in her body had started flowing backward. Her hands and feet were icy. “Are you sure?”
When the doctor realized that she didn’t look too happy, she gave her some cold advice. “If you don’t want to keep it, we can schedule an abortion for you while it’s still young. If you were not planning for a child in the first place then we recommend that you refrain from conceiving one, lest it becomes a suffering for both the baby and the parents.”
Arianne fell silent for a while before giving her reply. “As long as the baby is healthy, I’m keeping it.”
This was her hope… Mark had said that as long as she gave birth to a child, he would let her go… She was so close to freedom now… but why wasn’t she feeling happy?
It was then that Brian finished up with the call and came in. “Doctor, what’s the result?”
Just when the doctor put the slip in front of him and was about to speak, she was suddenly interrupted by Arianne. “I’m not pregnant. It’s getting late today, so I’ll go get my gastric checked out tomorrow.”
